Katherine Citak named Girls Soccer Player of the Year

Somerset — The 2012—’13 girl’s soccer season was one that saw all three teams qualify for regional tournament play, despite the fact the Lady Jumpers, Lady Warriors, and Lady Maroons all fell on some tough times this past season.

First-year coach Elizabeth Morrow took over the Somerset program, and with a lot of youth on her roster, the Lady Jumpers struggled to a 5-13 mark, finishing as district runner-up to Pulaski County.

PC meanwhile, won the first ever district championship in school history this season, but thanks to a loss to a 4-0 loss to East Jessamine in the opening round of the 12th Regional Tournament, the Lady Maroons and first-year head coach John Follman finished a game under the .500 mark, with a 7-8-2 mark.

Southwestern won the 48th District this season, but after bowing out of the regional tournament to Lincoln County in a hard-fought, 2-0 loss, the Lady Warriors concluded the season with a losing record of 7-12-2.

Despite the fact that all three programs finished below the .500 mark, that didn’t take away from the fact there were some outstanding individual performances during the year.

With that being said, it’s time to unveil our members of the 2012 Commonwealth Journal Girl’s All-County Soccer Team.

Leading the way on our squad is our Player of the Year, which this year goes to Southwestern’s Katherine Citak.

Citak scored six goals on the season for the Lady Warriors, but her contributions to the Southwestern program came on the defensive end of the field.

“She began the season as a center mid, but it became evident early on that she was needed at sweeper, and did a fantastic job once she made the move back,” stated Lady Warrior head coach Nick Stringer.

“In my opinion, she was the best player in the county,” added the SWHS coach. “She has an incredible combination of athleticism and determination that makes it nearly impossible for anyone to get behind her.”

Joining Citak on our team are three of her teammates — Hanna Ratliff, Nicole Upchurch, and Kaylee Shepherd.

Ratliff led the Lady Warriors in scoring this past season, notching 20 goals on the year to go along with five assists.

Upchurch served as Southwestern’s team captain this season, scoring six goals while adding five assists.

Shepherd meanwhile did an outstanding job as Southwestern’s keeper this season, posting 203 saves on her way to six shutouts.

Three Pulaski County Lady Maroon players make our team for the 2012 season. They are Kennedy McAlpin, Amy Rice, and Noor Al-Qabandi.

McAlpin averaged just over a goal per contest for PC, scoring 17 goals on the year in the 16 games that she played in.

Al-Qabandi finished second on Pulaski’s team with eight goals scored this season.

Rice played in goal for 16 games for the Lady Maroons, allowing just over two goals per contest.

Rounding out our team are a pair of Lady Jumpers — Jessica Wallace and Topanga Brown.

Wallace came in the year as Somerset’s lone senior, and despite the fact she was arguably Somerset’s best offensive weapon, she sacrificed her stats for the good of the team making the adjustment to a defender position.

Wallace still put together some gaudy number this season, scoring 13 goals on the year for Somerset while notching 11 assists.

Brown meanwhile served a dual role for Somerset this season, playing as both the Lady Jumpers keeper as well as a field player.

Brown scored five goals on the year and tallied two assists, and was voted to both the All-District and All-Region teams.
