Shane Skaggs fired as Somerset Christian boys basketball coach

Somerset — After Somerset Christian’s 81-79 loss to Community Christian on Friday night,  Cougars boys basketball head coach Shane Skaggs was fired from his position.

Skaggs, who was in his fourth season as the Cougars’ head coach, had no comment about the events leading up to his termination.

In a prepared statement, Somerset Christian School principal John Hale addressed the action of Skaggs termination as head coach.

“Somerset Christian School has ended its association with Coach Shane Skaggs. Everything we do at Somerset Christian School we strive to fulfill the school’s mission and vision for this community. In order to promote those standards, I felt it was necessary to make a staffing change in our young men’s basketball program.”

“This change will serve to take that program to another level of athleticism and sportsmanship. We appreciate the effort of Coach Shane Skaggs and we wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Over his four seasons, Skaggs compiled a 56-44 overall record. Skaggs led the Cougars to a Kentucky Christian Athletic Association State Final Four and a Region 4 runner-up title last season. Under Skaggs, the Cougars won the Region 4 championship in 2011.

Up to his firing, Skaggs and the Cougars were enjoying their best season ever with a 12-5 record and a KCAA State Power Poll top 5 ranking. The Cougars started off the season with nine straight wins, which included a KCAA Tip-Off Tournament title, and a KCAA State Power Poll top ranking. However, the Cougars had lost their last three games – under Skaggs –  by margins of three points or less.

The Cougars downed Lakeside Christian 69-51 on Saturday, under the direction of Somerset Christian Middle School coach Scott Rousch.

On Monday, Somerset Christian announced that Kirk Stickley was the new Cougars boys basketball head coach. Stickley, who was currently on the Cougars’ staff as an assistant coach, has been a longtime middle school coach throughout the Pulaski School system.

Stickley will make his Somerset Christian coaching debut tonight on the road against Fox Creek Christian.
