Lady Maroons pull away from Green Co.

Somerset — This past weekend the Lady Maroons hosted their annual Cancer Awareness Classic, which had the three local teams playing in it. Pulaski took on the Lady Dragons from Green County, beating the Lady Dragons 69-62. It wasn’t only a Classic for the lady Maroons it was also their senior night.

Pulaski is a veteran squad graduating seven of their players after this season. The seniors are Taylor Brock, Whitney West, Sarah Howard, Brittany Warren, Sarah Correll, Andrea Jenkins, and Haley Warren. Coach Brian Miller has had the honor of coaching most of these girls since they were in the eighth grade, in his first season with the Lady Maroons.

“I have never had a class this big, most of the time you have three or four at the most,” Coach Miller began. “It’s a big deal that seven of them have played for this long.”

Another milestone was reached by one of the Lady Maroons on Saturday night, Brittany Warren surpassed Tara Combs becoming the second leading scorer in history of Pulaski County Lady Maroons Basketball. Warren currently has 1853 points and counting with two regular season games left to go she is quickly closing in on the Leading spot set by Heather Baker with 2031 points.

“I can’t say enough about all the hard work these girls have put in,” stated Miller. “I was happy that on senior night they were able to get a win.”

The Lady Maroons were able to hit 10 threes in the win four of those coming from Haley Warren. Correll shot the ball extremely well hitting two threes in the first quarter. Pulaski got the lead early and were able to maintain it early. At the end of the first period the score was 19-12.

“Correll was a little sick today and then she came out shooting threes we wondered who that kid was,” Miller stated. “If she keeps shooting that well we hope she keeps the ear infection.”

In the second quarter Pulaski continued to drain shoots from long range. Going into halftime the Lady Maroons had hit seven as a team. At the break the Lady Dragons trailed by eight 34-26. Even in the second half Pulaski allowed Green County to hang on but never pass them.

“Tonight was one of those nights that we got to play a lot of kids and leave the seniors on the floor quiet a bit,” Miller began. “It means a lot to us to be able to get a win for them.”

In the third quarter the Lady Maroons got out scored in Green County’s efforts of taking the lead. The Lady Dragons hit three, threes in the period and fortunately for Pulaski they couldn’t hit free throws. The Lady Maroons were up 51-44 going into the fourth.

“Everything we do from here on out will be to prepare us for Casey and the district tournament,” stated Miller. “That’s really all these next two games are for, helping us practice for them.”

In the Fourth quarter the Lady Maroons closed out the game with a seven-point lead. Pulaski committed several silly turnovers at the end of the game as the Lady Dragons began to pressure them full court. The Lady Maroons won 69-62.

With the win on senior night Pulaski’s record for the season is now 11-16. The Lady Maroons play on tonight at McCreary County, and will return home on Friday night taking on the Lady Rebels from Boyle County.

“We just got to make sure that we are ready to go against Casey in that first game in the district tournament,” stated Miller. “In the tournament if you aren’t ready your season is over.”
