Lady Maroons eliminated by Casey Co., 52-27

Somerset — In the opening round of the Girls 47th District Tournament, the Lady Maroons offense for the game was offensive.

The Lady Maroons only scored 27 points for the game, and only scored 9 points in the opening half.

The Lady Rebels had an objective and they completed their mission by holding Brittany and Haley Warren to 14 points combined. Casey County was rewarded with a  52-27 win, a trip to the 47th District Tournament championship game, and a guaranteed trip to the 12th Region Tournament next week.

“There is only one team that ends the season with a win and that’s the state champion,” stated head coach for the Lady Maroons Brian Miller. “Its tough we have seven seniors who have played for us for five years and have given everything they have for this program. I just hope they have had fun and enjoyed playing basketball at Pulaski County High School.”

In the first quarter, the Lady Maroons were right at the tail of Casey County keeping the game relatively close only trailing by two at the end of the opening period. Pulaski could not get any of their threes to fall despite their efforts they also missed several shots from in close by the basket. At the end of the first the Lady Rebels led 10-8.

“Some nights you just come out and you cant shoot the ball it just so happened that tonight was one of those nights,” Coach Miller began. “I’ll give credit to Casey they played really good defense and we had trouble setting up plays and getting good looks at the basket.”

In the second quarter Casey County really stepped up their play only allowing one point to be scored by a free throw coming from Brittany Warren. Pulaski didn’t score in the quarter until there was only 48 seconds left in the half. The Lady Maroons kept jacking up threes but still no luck getting any to fall. The Lady Rebels ended the half with a 14-1 run. The score at the end of the second quarter was 21-9.

“Casey County is a good coached team and they made a long run in the region last year,” Miller stated. “I wish them the best of luck in their run this season.”

In the third quarter the Lady Maroons were final able to knock down a three unfortunately both times they hit one Casey matched it with one of their own. Pulaski was able to tie their score from the first half in the third period. The score was 36-18 at the end of third, the Lady Maroons trailed by 18 to go into the fourth quarter.

“It just wasn’t in our cards tonight, to make shots and execute,” Miller began. “Our kids played hard and I told them that when it comes down to it in the district tournament the coach has to be able to make adjustments and I feel like I let them down tonight.”

In the fourth quarter the Lady Maroons continued to fight until the final buzzer sounded but didn’t have enough gas left in the tank for a comeback. The Lady Rebels just continued to make their shots, hitting eight threes. Casey County just stuck to their game plan and made their shots. The final score was 52-27.

“There is something out there bigger and better for these seniors,” stated Miller. “I can’t say enough about these kids that put all the time and effort that they have.”

The Lady Maroons were hoping to continue their season on into the regional tournament that’s played on their home floor next week. The season record for Pulaski was 12-18. Hopefully Miller and his squad will have better luck next year.
