Sheriff investigating apparent murder-suicide

Hunter's Camp Road site of double shooting

Mt. Victory —

Two people are dead as a result of an apparent murder-suicide shooting in far eastern Pulaski County that happened Tuesday afternoon.
Vernon Lee Barnes, 34, and Paula Jean Barnes, 33, both of 289 Hunter’s Camp Road, were pronounced dead by the Pulaski County Coroner’s Office in their home following the incident.
According to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Depart-ment, the Pulaski County 911 Center received a report just before 1 p.m. Tuesday of a shooting at the victims’ address, located off of Ky. 192 more than 15 miles outside of Somerset.
The call stated that one person had shot another and then shot himself. Sheriff Todd Wood said that it appeared possible that the female victim made the call after being shot.
When deputies arrived, however, both individuals were deceased. The investigation revealed that the Barnes couple was having marital problems, and Mrs. Barnes was making plans to separate from her husband, according to the sheriff’s department. This lead to an apparent argument at the home.
After examining the crime scene and interviewing witnesses, investigators determined that Mr. Barnes shot his wife once with a .22 rifle. He then turned the weapon on himself and took his own life, according to the sheriff’s department.
Chief Deputy Coroner Anthony Gossett confirmed that Mrs. Barnes died of a gunshot wound to her torso, while Mr. Barnes died of a similar wound to the head.
Autopsies are scheduled for Wednesday morning at the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort, Ky.
To Wood’s knowledge, the only two people in the residence at the time were the victims.
The sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by Somerset-Pulaski County EMS, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the Pulaski County Coroner’s Office.
The investigation is continuing.
