SHS gridders injured in crash

Somerset —

Two local high school athletes were seriously injured Thursday afternoon after the passenger car they were in collided with a semi-trailer on a busy roadway.

According to the Somerset Police Department, Will Hinton was driving a passenger car westward and attempting to cross the eastbound lanes of East Ky. 80 Thursday from Barnett Street shortly before 5 p.m. when he apparently pulled into the path of an eastbound tractor trailer, which struck the car in the driver’s side.

The car struck a third vehicle before coming to rest in the westbound lanes of East Ky. 80.

Hinton and his passenger, Jacobi Gilmore, both football players with Somerset High School, had to be extricated from the passenger car by emergency officials after the collision.

Hinton is a senior at Somerset High School and Gilmore, the passenger, is a sophomore at the school.

Gilmore was flown by helicopter from the Meece Middle School parking lot, located near the accident scene, to the University of Kentucky Medical Center, according to the Somerset Police Department. Hinton was transported to UK as well, but its unclear at this point if he was transported there by ambulance or by helicopter.

SPD reports that the two appeared to suffer serious injuries in the crash.

East Ky. 80 is expected to remain shut down until at least 8 p.m. tonight (Thursday), according to SPD.
