PC runner Mayfield wins second state title

Somerset —

Devin Mayfield came into Saturday’s KTCCCA Meet of Champions at Lexington’s Masterson Station Park looking for another state championship after winning one in 2010.
Mayfield, a sixth-grader from Pulaski County, picked up a win in the 6th Grade and Under Championship girls race (3,000 meters) to come away with her second state championship in three years. The Lady Maroon sixth-grader, who was the only local runner to pick-up a victory on Saturday, finished first with a time of 12:11.
Two teammates of Mayfield — Sarah Burton and Emma Calfee — had strong finishes for the Lady Maroons, who finished eighth in the team standings. Burton finished 64th and Calfee came home in the 88th position.
Southwestern sixth-grader Madison Rodgers crossed the finish line in 90th place in the 6th Grade and Under Championship girls race.
In the boys version of the 6th Grade and Under Championship race, Pulaski County sixth-grader Ross Burton was the top local finisher with a 68th place finish and a clocking of 12:42. Teammate Dakota Wilson finished 95th. The Maroons, as a team, grabbed 18th place.
The Warrior boys had three runners make the top 100 in the 4th Grade and Under Championship boys race (2,000 meters). Kevin Dick cracked the top 50 with a 49th place finish and time of 8:35, while Andrew Stringer finished 77th and Carson Albright came home in the 99th spot.
Southwestern finished 21st in the team standings.
Somerset third-grader Emily Ham crossed the line in the 52nd position in the 4th Grade and Under Championship girls race with a clocking of 9:17. Second-grader Kate Bruner finished 109th. The Lady Jumpers finished 18th as a team.
Two local runners had stellar finishes in the middle school boys race (4,000 meters), as Pulaski’s Brennan Perkins finished 13th and Southwestern’s Matthew Jones came home 17th. Perkins’ time was 14:17, while Jones’ time was 14:27.
