Multiple fires damage residence

Somerset —

A fire at a home located south of Somerset kept firefighters busy for several hours early Monday morning.
Parkers Mill Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Keith Price said firefighters received a report of a home on fire at 931 South Horseshoe Drive at 12:36 a.m. Monday.
“A neighbor said they heard an explosion and looked outside and they saw flames coming from ... the rear of the house,” said Price.
Price, who lives near the home, was there within a couple minutes, and he said once he arrived on the scene he discovered blazed in several different rooms of the home.
“There were a total of four fires in the house,” said Price.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze relatively quickly, and Price said a rear bedroom sustained significant damage, while the rest of the home only sustained smoke and heat damage.
Price said no one was in the house when the blaze occurred.
Firefighters remained on the scene of the fire until around 3 a.m. Monday.
The owner of the home is unclear. Price said they found mail with the names of former residents of the home, yet he said he received a phone call from another person who stated they owned the home.
Parkers Mill was assisted on the scene by the Tateville Volunteer Fire Department and the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department.

  • Kentucky dubbed ‘houseboat capital’ by lawmakers

Lake Cumberland’s rising waters and reputation as a “Houseboat Lake” no doubt were inspiration for Kentucky Sen. Chris Girdler’s resolution naming Kentucky the “Houseboat Capital of the World.” The resolution was adopted recently by the Kentucky Senate, making the title official.
The houseboat designation made national news. A story and photographs about Kentucky’s houseboat industry and Somerset being the birthplace of houseboat construction were published online March 27 by Houseboat Magazine, a Harris Publishing Store publication based in Idaho Falls, ID. Houseboat Magazine will host National Houseboat Expo 2014 June 6-8 at State Dock Marina on Lake Cumberland.
