Southwestern wins Region

Warriors down Somerset 5-3 in 12th Region Championship game

Nicholasville — In a baseball cross-town rivalry showdown between Somerset High School and Southwestern High School, the 12th Region Championship title was on the line on Thursday night as West Jessamine High School.

After eliminating the host school West Jessamine High School (5-2) in a rain delay continuation of the regional semifinal game one hour prior to their regional championship showdown with the Briar Jumpers, Southwestern came away with the 12th Region Tournament trophy after downing Somerset 5-3.

It had been almost 10 years to the day since the Warriors had won their first regional championship back in 2004. On Thursday night, the 2014 Warriors downed two opponents in one night to claim the program’s second 12th Region baseball crown.

After taking the lead at 5-3 on a big three-run fifth inning, the Warriors relied on some defensive magic to hold the Jumpers at bay in both the sixth and seventh innings.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Jumpers had runners on first and third with only one out. But a Southwestern 6-4-3 double play (Jacob Burchett to Trevor Stacy to Zack Profitt)  ended the inning and kept Somerset from closing in on the Warriors’ lead.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Somerset had a runner on second and the tying run at the plate with one out. But Warrior second baseman Trevor Stacey snagged a sharply hit line drive and quickly doubled up the Briar Jumper base runner at second base to end the game.

The Warriors opened the game up with a Trevor Howard sacrifice fly to score Hunter Cromer in their opening at bats in the first inning.

In the third inning, Lucas Turpin hit a sacrifice fly to score Cromer to put the Warriors up 2-0.

However, Somerset rallied in the bottom half of the third inning to take the lead at 3-2. Jacob Pelston hit an infield single to score Chandler Purcell from third. Then, Trae Harmon hit a bases-loaded single down the left field line to score Pelston and Addison Thompson.

But it was in the fifth inning where Southwestern took control of the game with a three-run rally of their own. Profitt singled to centerfield to score Howard and Burchett. Chris Lynch singled through the infield to score Lucas Turpin from second base.

Southwestern senior pitcher Wyatt Burton came in the game in relief midway through the third inning to pick up the win and, in essence, shut down the Somerset offense.

Somerset ended their season with a 24-15 record to go along with a 47th District Championship and a 12th Region runner-up trophy.

Southwestern (27-12) will now travel north to take on the winners of the 8th Region in the KHSAA State Baseball Tournament at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington, Ky, at on Monday, June 2, 6 p.m.
