Class of 2014 surpassed all others at SWHS

Somerset —

“Another year, another class,” Southwestern High school English teacher Doug Reese said before taking his place in the column of academia to salute the passing class of 2014.
But this was not just another class. They achieved a college and career readiness rating of 97.6 percent, the highest in school history, principal Danita Ellis said.
Of the 313 graduating seniors, 27 graduated with a Grade Point Average of 4.0 or above and 21 with 3.8 or above; 44 were National Honor Society members and 50 received Advanced Placement Diplomas.
“The class of 2014 has surpassed all other classes before them,” Ellis said.
They were ranked 14th in the state for their 2013 Kentucky Performance Rating for Education Progress test scores.
“I am so very proud of how hard you have worked,” Ellis told the 2014 seniors during their graduation ceremony Friday evening at Southwestern High School.
The graduating seniors were offered more than $5.2 million in scholarships and so far have accepted a total of $3,872,510, Ellis said.
“We are graduating … something only 3.4 million other high school students can say this year,” Class President Brittany Pittman told her class. “We are truly exceptional.”
In her speech, she discussed how the class has grown from the awkwardness of not knowing what to do or where to go as freshmen to the bold graduates they have become.
“We would watch entire groups of seniors walk by, wondering: ‘Wow, how do they look that old?’” she said. “But today we are those seniors, that have grown and changed in so many ways.
“I could go on and on about all the everlasting marks my fellow graduates and I have left on this school and that this school has left on us,” Pittman added, “ ... but I think we are all just waiting to throw our caps and call it a day.”
