Location of dam ceremony moved to Russell Co. school auditorium

Russell County —

The location of today’s Wolf Creek Dam Completion Ceremony has changed due to the possibility of inclement weather. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is also increasing security measures for the ceremony in the wake of the recent Boston Marathon tragedy.
Today’s ceremony, which will feature Congressman Hal Rogers, R-Somerset as the main speaker, will now take place at the Russell County Schools Auditorium at 2167 U.S. 127, Russell Springs.
Marcheta Sparrow, secretary for the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, will represent state government at the event, beginning at 11 a.m. EDT.
In accordance with more stringent security measures, all persons and vehicles entering the area are subject to search. No firearms or other weapons will be allowed on the property. Violators may be subject to prosecution.
All bags, backpacks, and personal items will be searched before attendees can enter the auditorium.
The public’s cooperation is appreciated.
Rehabilitation of Wolf Creek Dam was initiated after an outside panel of experts in 2005 declared the dam in “high risk” of failure. Level of Lake Cumberland has been kept about 40 feet below normal since January 2007 to ease pressure on the troubled structure and facilitate the repair operation.
Completion of the rehabilitation project also allows the lake to begin rising, targeted at between 700 and 705 feet above sea level by the first of June. After remedial work is complete this coming December, the lake will be allowed to rise to pool stage, or tree line, by Summer 2014.
