Community rallying around volunteer firefighter with head injury

Somerset —

LaDonna Hurd has spent much of her life helping others.
Now, family members and friends are rallying around Hurd, a volunteer firefighter, home health nurse and single mother, while she struggles to recover from a serious head injury.
“This is a brotherhood,” said Robert Mounce, who serves alongside Hurd as a firefighter at Bronston Volunteer Fire Department.
Hurd, who is also a Burnside firefighter, fell on Wednesday, April 9 while roller skating with her three children — a 19-year-old daughter and a 16-year-old son, along with an 18-year-old foster daughter — when she fell.
Hurd hit her head in the fall, but no one thought she was seriously injured.
Mounce said everyone believed she didn’t hit her head very hard, but she was bleeding so they called an ambulance. Once Hurd was taken to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, the situation took a much more serious turn.
“The doctor said ‘You’ve got to get her to UK,” said Mounce.
Doctors stabilized Hurd and she was flown to University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, where she has remained.
“It was a freak accident,” said Mounce. “It was a one-in-a-million chance, I guess, that it hit where it did.”
A Facebook group called “Prayers for LaDonna” has been created, and as of Tuesday afternoon the page had garnered 2,446 members.
According to infor-mation posted there, doctors found that Hurd had suffered brain hemorrhages and other injuries in the fall, and Hurd was placed in a medically-induced coma after she arrived at UK while they worked to get the pressure in her skull under control.
As of Tuesday, one of Hurd’s children reported that the pressure was low — a very optimistic sign.
As Hurd continues to heal, and as doctors begin to slowly bring her out of the coma, people around the country have shown their support. Posts from as far away as Pennsylvania, Alabama, Missouri, and Georgia have appeared on the page.
