First reading of 2014-15 budget is approved

Somerset — Pulaski Fiscal Court yesterday passed the first reading of the proposed $29.87 million 2014-15 budget.

“It was a long process, but really not a lot has changed from last year’s budget,” said county treasurer Joan Isaacs. “It’s tight and we’re going to strapped, but it’s very workable. We can do it.”

Isaacs acknowledged that not all the county’s desired projects could be included due to constraints.

“We tried to accommodate the needs of everyone,” Isaacs said. “But with budget cuts from the upper levels, we were in a situation where we had to work with what we had.”

Pulaski County Judge-Executive Barty Bullock noted that changes could be made to the budget prior to the second reading.

Here are the funding totals included in the proposed budget:

• Total General Fund: $13,701,149.00

• Total Road Fund: $5,664,031.00

• Total Jail Fund: $3,341,461.00

• Total L.G.E.A. Fund: $550,500.00

• Total Fire Protection Fund: $2,633,500.00

• Total Industrial Development Fund: $1,548,000.00

• Emergency Dispatch Fund: $1,928,690.00

• Economic Development Fund: $7,220.00

• Total Federal Grant Fund: $5,000

• Grand Total All Funds: $29,874,811.00.

Magistrates unanimously passed the first reading of the budget, and also approved an annual standing order to pay recurring expanses such as payroll and utilities.

Fiscal court also set salaries for statutory employees such as magistrates, deputy jailers, the treasurer and road supervisors. Isaacs said that due to budgetary constraints, those salaries did not change.
