Pulaski County passes test posed by Cardinals, 81-62

Somerset —

After disposing of Louisville Waggener in the opening round of the inaugural Lake Cumberland Holiday Hoops Tournament on Thursday night, the Pulaski County Maroons returned to the PC Gym for a second round encounter against a Taylor County team that was riding a modest, three-game winning streak.
The Cardinals — with the dynamic, one-two punch of Caleb Wiggington and Quentin Goodin — expected to give coach Al Gover and crew a stiff challenge on Friday night, with a berth into the semi finals awaiting the winner.
And, when all was said and done, Pulaski County passed this test with flying colors.
Kody Johnson notched 21 points and Taylor Gover added 20, helping the Maroons break open a close game at halftime, on their way to an impressive, 81-62 triumph over the Cardinals.
And, it was at the defensive end where PC got its work done in this one.
The Maroons forced the Cardinals into 24 turnovers for the contest, helping Gover’s club run its record to 7-3 on the season, winning for the fifth time in its past six games.
“Our defense, especially in the second half was the difference in the game,” stated a very happy coach Gover after the contest.
“Every game we’ve played pretty well in, we’ve been pretty good defensively,” added the Maroon coach. “I think that sets the tone for our team — we have that intensity and that kind of effort — we’re pretty good. I think in the second half, Kody Johnson stepped up and did a really good job on (Quentin) Goodin, and he accepted that challenge; that was a big difference in the ballgame right there.”
As far as starts to a game goes, Pulaski County could have hardly began this one any faster.
The Maroons raced out to a quick, 9-0 lead less than two minutes into the game, but the Cardinals would come roaring back.
