Suspects in January Waffle King robbery indicted

—

Two men who allegedly robbed a local restaurant in early January have been indicted on robbery charges.
Larry M. Sword, 30, of Clayhole, Ky., and Randy Combs, 35, of Jackson, Ky., were indicted by a Pulaski County grand jury this month on one count each of first-degree robbery in connection with a Jan. 2 hold-up at Waffle King in Somerset.
According to Lt. Shannon Smith of the Somerset Police Department (SPD), a report of a robbery at Waffle King, located on U.S. 27, came in shortly after 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 2.
An employee reported that two men entered the restaurant and held it up — one armed with a gun, the other with a knife, demanding money. The two men, later identified as Sword and Combs, then reportedly fled into an adjoining field in the direction of Monticello Street, behind the restaurant.
One diner was in the restaurant when the incident occurred, and police said no one was injured.
Officers used Aras, a police K-9 unit, to track Combs to the area behind Office Depot and he was arrested. Sword, who was allegedly hiding nearby, fled when officers closed in on Combs, according to Smith. He was arrested soon after when officers tracked him as well. Neither man was bitten by the dog, according to Smith.
The knife and gun — which turned out to be a BB gun, albeit one that looked a lot like a regular pistol — were recovered a short distance away from where Sword and Combs were located.
According to the indictment, both Combs and Sword were are accused of committing first-degree robbery “ ... by threatening the use of physical force while armed with a knife and/or a deadly/dangerous weapon in the course of committing a theft at Waffle King.”
SPD Det. Chris Gates appeared as a witness before the grand jury.
Both men remain in the Pulaski County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond.
An indictment is an accusation only. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
