Bear sightings on the rise in Pulaski County

Somerset —

These are bare facts. Listen to this 911 conversation about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday.
Dispatcher: “911.”
“I didn’t know who else to call. I have a very large black bear ... in my yard.”
911 dispatcher: “Okay, you need to stay in the house, okay? ... What’s your address?’
“1513 Lewis Bray Road.”
911 dispatcher: “Is there just one?”
“That’s all I’ve seen.”
911 dispatcher: “What’s your name?
“Rose Bronstrup. We live on the lake ... oh yeah, he’s trying to get up to the deck now. He’s trying to get to the bird feeder that’s up here on the deck.”
Rose Bronstrup and her husband, Charles, have owned the property where they live across from Woodson Bend since 1976. They have lived there permanently since the 1990s.
“We’ve seen raccoons ... all kinds of small animals but this is the first bear,” Rose said.
“The bear came up on the deck and sort of sat on the railing near a bird feeder,” Rose said. “I was talking on the telephone to my son and looked up and saw the bear.”
“Were your scared?” a reporter wondered.
“I don’t know about being scared but I sure was shocked,” Rose said.
“My husband came in about 8:20 ... he came in through the front of the house. We just waited the bear out ... it stayed  on the deck about an hour. The bear had been in the front yard too ... he tore up a bird feeder out there,”  she said.
A neighbor, Jim Cromer, provided a copy of the picture of the bear for this story.
“I’m just concerned most people are not aware that bears are so close  ... some of my neighbors put table scraps out for their dogs and black bears have a very good sense of smell ... it will draw bears right to their homes,” said Cromer.
