Citizens aid SPD in solving hit-and-run

Somerset —

Sharp-eyed citizens helped Somerset Police nab a couple of alleged car thieves on Friday, stopping the suspects from potentially breaking into more vehicles.
Anthony J. Johnson III, 20, and Joshua S. Phelps, 19, both of Somerset, were taken into custody and charged with leaving the scene of an accident and receiving stolen property over $10,000.
According to the Somerset Police Department (SPD), at 8:39 a.m. Friday morning, SPD officers responded to a report of a hit-and-run incident on Lookout Street, near the Tradewind shopping center.
Witnesses reportedly saw two young males lose control of a red pick-up truck, crash it into a utility pole, and then flee the seen.
Not long afterward, SPD officers learned that a 2005 Ford F-150 pick-up had been stolen from a residence on nearby Grove Street, matching the description of the one involved in the earlier incident.
Multiple individuals called the Pulaski County 911 Center to offer updated information on the location of the suspects, according to SPD. This led to Sgt. Billy Bolin discovering Johnson and Phelps in the parking lot of Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, allegedly checking a car to see if it was unlocked.
The suspects were observed by witnesses identifying them as the ones that fled from the earlier hit-and-run, according to SPD.
Johnson and Phelps were lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center.
The case will be presented to an upcoming session of the Pulaski Grand Jury, and the investigation is continuing.
SPD was assisted at the scene by Kentucky Utilities and the Somerset Fire Department.
Capt. Shannon Smith stated that the Somerset Police Department thanks those people who took time to call 911 and reported what they saw, as their assistance made a significant impact on this case.
