Woman critical after being struck on West Ky. 80

Somerset —

A woman was injured Saturday after she was hit by a vehicle while crossing West Ky. 80 on foot.
Samantha P. Martin McBride, 31, of West Way Apartments, located at 2211 West Ky. 80, was transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center Saturday afternoon for treatment of serious injuries after she walked in front of an eastbound truck, according to information provided by Somerset Police Department.
Witnesses on the scene told investigating officers that McBride was upset and “in an uproar” when she ran across West Ky. 80 just after 4 p.m. Saturday.
“She had crossed the road chasing down what she thought was her landlord,” said Capt. Shannon Smith, with SPD. “When she realized it wasn’t him, she started back across the road.”
According to witnesses, that’s about when a 1997 Ford Ranger truck, driven by Glenn E. Hines, 70, of WTLO Road, approached the area.
Witnesses stated that McBride appeared to see the truck “and had time to stop, but decided to try and beat it,” according to Smith.
Hines reportedly told officers that he was looking left in order to watch a backhoe that had pulled out wide onto West Ky. 80 to ensure he was clear of it.
When Hines looked back to the roadway, McBride was in front of him.
“(He) stated he never had time to hit the brakes,” said Smith.
McBride was rushed from the scene of the accident by Somerset-Pulaski County EMS and flown to UK Medical Center. She was listed in critical condition there, according to investigating officers.
Hines was treated at the scene for anxiety and transported to LCRH to be checked out, according to SPD.
The Somerset Fire Department also responded to the accident.
