Somerset —

A special guest from one of the iconic acts of early rock-and-roll will be appearing at Beach Buckets in downtown Somerset Friday night.
Al Holland, a member of The Platters, will take the stage at the music venue on the square at 8:30 p.m.
Beach Buckets operator Caroline Epperson got to know Holland as a friend while living in Florida.
“He and my son Christopher got to be real good friends; then I met him and hit it off,” she said. “He’s so down-to-earth and so soulful. He makes you feel good to be around him.”
Epperson said Holland was on his way up to Michigan for a gig when she got him to stop in and perform at Beach Buckets tonight. He will likely do between 30-40 songs, and will be able to meet fans during a break.
“He’s the real thing,” she said. “This is a piece of history.”
Holland wasn’t a founding member of The Platters but was with them during their heyday. THe group was biggest in the 1950s and ‘60s, with four no. 1 singles. Songs like “Only You” and “The Great Pretender” remain classics to this day.
