Eubank man charged in tractor theft

Suspect jumped off moving tractor as he tried to escape

Somerset —

Police arrested a Eubank man this week in connection with a stolen tractor.
According to Eubank Police Chief Colin Hatfield, a joint investigation by the Eubank Police Department, the Science Hill Police Department and the Casey County Sheriff’s Department began on Dec. 14 when Pulaski County 911 received a call from a motorist who believed they were behind a stolen tractor from Casey County.
Deputies with the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department tracked the tractor down and attempted to stop the driver while on West Ridge Road in Eubank, with the help of Science Hill Police Chief Robbie Gossett and Kentucky State Police.
According to Hatfield, “ ... the operator of the stolen tractor jumped out of the moving tractor and fled on foot, leaving the tractor to run into a tree and finally coming to rest.”
The suspect was able to escape arrest that night, but an investigation led authorities on Thursday to the residence of Jeremy Branscum, 30, located on Ky. 1721 in Eubank.
Hatfield said Branscum “fled out the back door” of his home when authorities arrived. He was found soon after in an underground cellar on the pro-perty, according to Hatfield.
Hatfield said Casey County Sheriff Jerry Coffman and Casey County Deputy Jamie Walters interviewed Branscum at the scene and Branscum told the officers he stole the tractor.
Branscum was arrested and transported to the Casey County Detention Center. He was charged with two counts of first-degree criminal mischief, two counts of third-degree burglary, one count of theft by unlawful taking (farm equipment ) over $10,000 but under $1,000,000 , one count of theft by unlawful taking over $500, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
The investigation is continuing with the possibility of more charges out of Pulaski County.
