Burnett will run for county clerk

Somerset — A veteran deputy county clerk said Thursday she will be a candidate to succeed incumbent Pulaski County Clerk Ralph Troxtell when his retirement is effective at the end of December 2014.

Linda Burnett, a deputy county clerk for 28 years, told the Commonwealth Journal Thursday she definitely will be a candidate for county clerk next year. She is a Republican.

Burnett’s revelation came a day following Troxtell’s announcement that he will retire when he completes his second term. He will have a total of 32 years of service in county government as a Road Department employee, magistrate and county clerk.

Talk around the courthouse is that Tim Price, an unsuccessful candidate for county clerk in 2006, will seek the office again next year. Price, currently a deputy county clerk who works at the Somerset Mall branch office, was off for a “personal day” and unavailable for comment when this article was written.

Price finished second in a five-candidate race for county clerk in 2006. He got 3,109 votes, short of Troxtell’s winning total of 4,660.

Troxtell succeeded Trudy Denham who decided not to seek another term. Denham immediately endorsed Troxtell as her successor. Troxtell declined to endorse a candidate “at this time” when he made his retirement announcement.

Other possible candidates for county clerk are Yvonne Smith, who in 2006 was vice president for Jondy Chemical Company; Arlene Phelps, retired county treasurer; former magistrate Clifford P. Jasper, and Lana Crawford who ran unsuccessfully against Troxtell when he won a second term in 2010.

Another name being mentioned is Hilda Legg, former director of The Center for Rural Development, three-time presidential appointee and an appointee in former Gov. Ernie Fletcher’s administration to promote Lake Cumberland during early years of Wolf Creek Dam rehabilitation.

May it be emphasized that during compilation of this article,  Legg and none of the aforementioned former candidates was available for comment. Mention of their names is merely speculation and they may or may not be interested in seeking the county clerk’s office next year.
