Deputy jailer arrested, faces suspension

Hammond charged in domestic violence case

Somerset — A deputy jailer is facing suspension after he was arrested this week on alleged domestic violence charges.

Mark A. Hammond, 36, of Hope Way in Somerset, was arrested at around 9:30 p.m. Monday at his home after he allegedly injured another person in a domestic incident.

According to the arrest citation, filed by Somerset Police Officer William Greer, the victim reported that Hammond “ ... pushed her over the sink and grabbed her by the throat then choked her.”

Greer reportedly took photos of red marks on the victim’s throat.

SPD Capt. Shannon Smith confirmed that the victim was Hammond’s live-in girlfriend. The two have a child together, according to Smith.

According to the citation, a third person in the home witnessed the alleged assault.

Hammond was charged with fourth-degree assault (domestic violence), minor injury,  a misdemeanor.

He was lodged in the detention center for a short while, but he posted bond and was released by Tuesday morning.

Hammond, who has been with the detention center since June of 2010, is expected to report to work on Thursday. Pulaski County Jailer Mike Harris said Hammond will be placed on a five-day suspension.

Pulaski County Attorney Martin Hatfield said that, according to the county’s personnel guidelines, anything beyond the five-day suspension requires approval by Pulaski County Fiscal Court.

Harris said he would recommend Hammond be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
