Brenzel steps down as LCRH CEO

Somerset — Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital (LCRH) has announced that CEO Mark Brenzel has decided to step down from the top leadership position.

According to Scott Raplee, President of LifePoint Hospitals’ Central Group, a national search has been launched to find the right person to fill the position. Brenzel will remain as CEO on an interim basis while the search is underway.

“We are grateful to Mark for his contributions to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital and the Somerset community during his tenure as CEO. We are discussing the possibility of Mark taking a new role with LCRH once the new CEO is hired,” Raplee said in an LCRH press release.

In a recent communication to the hospital staff, Brenzel wrote:

“A few weeks ago, I informed Scott Raplee, President of LifePoint’s Central Group, about my decision to step down from the position of CEO of Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. I have struggled managing some health problems since last year that have required me to limit some activities including work hours. While these lifestyle changes have been helpful, they have made it difficult for me to keep up with the demands of this job.

“ This is a difficult and exciting time for LCRH. Healthcare reform is creating significant challenges for all hospitals around the country and LCRH is no exception. It is also creating a tremendous opportunity for LCRH to expand its services and the community it serves...

“I have greatly enjoyed the last four years and am glad to be ending my hospital management career where it began in 1976 when I first visited LCRH. We have made great progress in improving patient care and implementing new strategies that will help LCRH be successful in the new healthcare reform environment. My wife and I are planning to stay in the community for the long term and look forward to supporting LCRH in any way that we can.”

Under Brenzel’s leadership, LCRH engaged in a comprehensive patient safety and quality improvement program, which has led to meaningful improvements in patient care. In addition, LCRH received a three-year accreditation from The Joint Commission (TJC), which is the gold standard accrediting organization for hospitals, and became the only hospital in the region to receive TJC certification as a Stroke Center.

This summer LCRH will become a teaching hospital for internal medicine and family medicine residents with the American Osteopathic Association, another notable accomplishment attributable to Brenzel,

“The community has been well served by Mark’s leadership at Lake Cumberland. I am grateful that he has agreed to remain onboard in coming weeks as we begin the process of recruiting and hiring a new CEO,” said Hilma Prather, LCRH Board Chair. “I am confident we will find the right person to lead the hospital in the future.”

LifePoint and the LCRH Board of Trustees will identify the best candidate to fill this crucial role at the 295-bed hospital. Details will be announced once a decision is made.

LCRH is one of 61 hospital campuses in 20 states operated by LifePoint Hospitals. LifePoint is the sole community hospital provider in the majority of the communities it serves. The company is headquartered in Brentwood, Tenn.
