Deputy jailer reinstated after charges dropped

Somerset —

A deputy jailer has been reinstated into his position after a domestic violence charge brought against him was dropped.
“Mr. Hammond and I are very pleased that the criminal charge has been dropped,” said local attorney Robert Norfleet, who represents Mark Hammond, 36. “Mr. Hammond and his family can now move forward through what has been a very difficult time for them.”
Hammond, of Hope Way in Somerset, was arrested earlier this month on one count of fourth-degree assault (domestic violence), minor injury, which is a misdemeanor.
According to the arrest citation, filed by Somerset Police Officer William Greer, the victim reported that Hammond “ ... pushed her over the sink and grabbed her by the throat then choked her.”
Greer reportedly took photos of red marks on the victim’s throat.
Hammond was lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center for a short time before posting bail.
After his arrest, Pulaski County Fiscal Court voted to suspend Hammond from his duties at the detention center without pay pending the outcome of the investigation.
Pulaski County Attorney Martin Hatfield said the charge was dismissed in Pulaski District Court after the alleged victim, identified as Hammond’s girlfriend, requested while under oath that the charge be dropped.
During Tuesday’s Pulaski County Fiscal Court meeting, magistrates voted to reinstate Hammond, who has been with the detention center since June 2010.
“Without a  doubt, Mr. Hammond will be seeking immediate reinstatement to his  employment with back pay,” Norfleet stated. “Mr. Hammond and his family continues to  request privacy during what has been a very difficult time on him and his family.”
