Somerset-Pulaski SRT responds to Lincoln County spill

Somerset —

Pulaski County Hazmat crews were called to the scene of an accident early Tuesday morning in Lincoln County.
A stretch of U.S. 27 in Lincoln County was closed for several hours Tuesday while members of the Somerset-Pulaski County Special Response Team /Hazmat Area 12 worked to clean up approximately 50 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled from a Pepsi delivery truck after a two-vehicle wreck.
No one was injured in the accident, which happened around 7:40 a.m. just south of the Halls Gap hill, according to information from the Danville Advocate-Messenger.
According to information provided by police, a southbound Nissan sedan driven by Sally Moss of Stanford crossed the center line and collided with the fuel tank of a northbound Pepsi delivery truck driven by Logan Radley of Somerset.
The two vehicles were traveling at low speeds, around 20 miles per hour, when the accident happened. Radley reportedly attempted to pull his truck onto the shoulder in order to avoid Moss’ vehicle.
Police said a medical condition may have caused Moss to begin driving erratically.
Moss was taken to a hospital for treatment of her condition.
The Pepsi truck’s fuel tank leaked approximately 50 gallons of diesel fuel onto the roadway and shoulder after the wreck, said Don Gilliam, Lincoln County’s emergency management director.
The leaked fuel was contained with absorbent booms, said Gilliam.
The Hazmat team pumped away much of the fuel that was contained and had not seeped into the ground, but the ground where the fuel spilled will have to be dug up and replaced to prevent contamination, Gilliam said.
Traffic was rerouted along Ky. 1247 while the scene was cleaned up.
