Four people airlifted out after crash

Somerset — Four people were injured and airlifted from the scene of a head-on collision southwest of Somerset.

A two-vehicle accident was reported at around 11:15 a.m. Friday on Ky. 90 around two miles west of the Ky. 90-U.S. 27 interchange.

Deputies with the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene and discovered that an eastbound 2002 GMC Envoy SUV collided with a westbound 1986 Nissan pickup truck. The accident happened when the driver of the Envoy, identified by officials as Bonnie M. Cowan, 52, of Monticello, apparently attempted to make a left turn into the Lake Cumberland Outdoors-Bass Pro Shop and turned into the path of the Nissan.

Cowan, along with the driver and two passengers in the Nissan truck, were injured in the accident and airlifted to the UK Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.

Details on the injuries suffered by those involved were not known.

The names of the three others involved in the wreck were not released as of Friday afternoon.

“The names and addresses of those involved in the collision were not available at the time of this news release due to the severity of the injuries and (the patients) being flown from the scene before their information could be ascertained by investigator Deputy Jason Lay,” stated a press release from the sheriff’s department.

Emergency responders were surprised to find a dog in the front cab of the Nissan truck. The dog, though frightened, appeared to be uninjured. The dog was removed from the scene of the accident by Darren Wesley, with the Pulaski County Animal Shelter, a short time after the patients were airlifted.

Traffic on Ky. 90 was impacted for several hours Friday while the scene was cleaned up.

According to the sheriff’s department, Cowan was treated and released from the UK Medical Center as of Friday afternoon.

Along with the sheriff’s department, the Bronston Volunteer Fire Department, the Burnside Volunteer Fire Department, Somerset-Pulaski County EMS, the Pulaski County Rescue Squad, AirMethods, Air Evac, and PHI Air Service responded to the accident.

  • DOWNTOWN SIDEWALK FOTO.JPG Heated sidewalks provide sparks for workers
A heated sidewalk to melt snow and ice was “quite the thing” a half century ago in a small town like Somerset. This town’s first and only electrically warmed sidewalk was installed facing Fountain Square alongside First and Farmers National Bank when the bank’s downtown headquarters building was constructed in 1963-64.
As snow fell, the warm sidewalk melted a walkway about 2 feet wide alongside the bank. It was the talk of the town; quite a gimmick.
