Former Tennessee fugitive sentenced

Burnside —

A Tennessee man indicted in 2010 on drug charges was sentenced this week to a decade in prison after he was on the run from authorities for more than two years.
Christopher Scott Phelps, 33, of Nashville, Tenn., appeared Tuesday before Pulaski Circuit Judge Jeffrey T. Burdette.
Phelps was initially arrested in November 2009 after deputies with the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department received a report of someone manufacturing methamphetamine at a Hidden Creek Drive home in Somerset, according to Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney David L. Dalton. Phelps’ case went before a Pulaski County grand jury in March 2010 and he was indicted on manufacturing methamphetamine and first-degree possession of a controlled substance. Dalton said the grand jury in July 2012 indicted Phelps on one charge of perjury after he reportedly gave false testimony to the grand jury.
Phelps pleaded guilty to the amended charges of possession of a methamphetamine precursors and first-degree perjury, and he entered a pretrial diversion program.
But in December 2010, Phelps was terminated from the drug treatment program and he absconded from supervision, according to Dalton.
Phelps was reportedly on the run until July 2013, when he was arrested as part of a traffic stop in Lebanon, Tenn.
According to Dalton, Phelps on Tuesday asked that Burdette hand down a sentencing plan that included serving a prison sentence for contempt and a period of probation.
Phelps was represented Tuesday by local defense attorney Mark Stanziano.
Burdette declined Phelps’ request and sentenced him to 10 years in prison for possession of a methamphetamine precursor and first-degree perjury, according to Dalton.
