Al Gover resigns as Pulaski coach

Gover compiled 100 wins and 5 district titles over 5 seasons

Somerset — For the second time, Al Gover has resigned as the Pulaski County High School boys basketball coach after five seasons at the helm.

On Friday, Gover announced he was resigning from the Maroons’ head boys basketball coaching position and told his team this past weekend.

Prior to his announcement, Gover had led the Pulaski boys basketball program to five straight 47th District championship titles. However, during those five years, Pulaski was eliminated in the first round of the 12th Region Tournament the past three years and were eliminated in the semifinal rounds the other two seasons.

Over the last five seasons, Gover complied a 100-56 record –  which included three 20-win seasons. In the 2012-13 season, Pulaski had the second best record in the region at 23-7 and again in the 2010-11 campaign the Maroons had the second best 12th Region mark at 26-7.

Gover’s only losing season of his second Pulaski coaching tenure came in 2009, when the Maroons went 13-18. However, that season, the Maroons, won the 47th District Tournament and advanced to the 12th Region Tournament semifinals.

Gover also coached at  Pulaski from 1996 to 2001. In those five seasons, Gover went 72-55 with four winning seasons. However, during his first stint at Pulaski, Gover never made it out of the tough 48th District – which included South Laurel, North Laurel Southwestern and Somerset.

Under Gover, the 1997-98 Maroons posted one of the best records in the 12th Region at 22-5, but the Maroons lost to Somerset in the opening round of the 48th District Tournament.

Prior to taking the Pulaski job in 1996, Gover led his alma mater Somerset High School Briar Jumpers to the 1995-96 48th District Tournament championship title and a 12th Region semifinal appearance.

Gover is only the fourth Pulaski boys basketball coach since 1977 — Dave Fraley coached Pulaski from 1977 to 1995, Dave Schulz from 1995 to 1996, Gover from 1996 to 2001, Fraley from 2001 to 2006, Mark Flynn 2006 to 2009, and Gover from 2009 to 2014.
