Somerset — Jack Keeney has held a lot of highly visible positions in Pulaski County — and has said goodbye to them as well.

Now the time has come to bid adieu to his latest community leadership role.

God’s Food Pantry released a statement Friday that Keeney was resigning from his position as executive director of the local food bank.

The retirement is effective as of December 31, 2013. Keeney will be staying around to help through the holiday season.

“When I took it, it was temporary,” said Keeney. “I told (the Pantry) I would help out for a little while until they got their feet on the ground.”

Keeney took over in June of 2012, first as interim director, then applying to make the position more permanent. He replaced Debbie Long as executive director.

Prior to that, he was executive director of the Somerset-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce. He has also served as principal of Meece Middle School.

“I had retired at one time, and now I’m retired again,” he said. “When I retired from education after 33 years, I realized there were a lot of people in the community that were hurting, but (working with the Pantry gives you a different perspective.

“It was a blessing being able to help in the time that I was there,” he added. “I think the Pantry is in great shape ... I hope the community stays behind God’s Food Pantry.”

The pantry is a collective organization made up of churches, businesses and individuals who donate time, supplies and money. The pantry distributes food to local members of the community affected by hard times.

“We are sadden to receive the resignation of Mr. Keeney,” said God’s Food Pantry President Tricia Branham in a written statement. “We appreciate him serving as our director for the past year and a half. He has done a great job and we wish him well.”

God’s Food Pantry is currently accepting resumes for the position of executive

director and will be taking applicants through November 15.
