Local man dies in Ky. 461 crash

Somerset — A Pulaski County man was killed in a two-vehicle collision east of Somerset.

Josef C. Phillippi, 37, of Somerset, was pronounced dead at the scene Friday afternoon by Pulaski County Coroner Chuck Godbey.

Phillippi’s Toyota Corolla apparently struck a tractor-trailer on Ky. 461 around three miles from the intersection of Ky. 461 and East Ky. 80. The accident occurred at around 4 p.m. Friday, and emergency personnel shut Ky. 461 down and rerouted traffic while accident reconstructionists with the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department investigated the crash.

According to officials on the scene, Phillippi’s northbound Corolla apparently crossed the center line, colliding head-on with the tractor-trailer, which was southbound.

The driver of the semi, who’s name was not available as of press time, apparently tried to avoid the collision and drifted to the outer shoulder of the southbound lane of Ky. 461. After the collision, the tractor-trailer veered across the northbound lane and collided with a rock wall.

Godbey said Phillippi worked at TTAI, located near the crash site on Ky. 461, and he said Phillippi lived not far from the factory. Godbey also said it appeared Phillippi died from blunt force trauma injuried to the head, chest and neck.

The driver of the semi was taken by Somerset-Pulaski County EMS to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital to be checked out.

Traffic was detoured around the accident scene well into Friday evening.

The Shopville Volunteer Fire Department, Pulaski County Rescue Squad, Kentucky State Police and Pulaski County Hazmat also responded to the accident.
