Somerset receives environmental award for fuel plan

Somerset —

The City of Somerset last week received an award for its efforts in clean energy practices.
Somerset Mayor Eddie Girdler attended the “Green Fleets of the Bluegrass” awards ceremony in Louisville last week. The city received the award for 2012 from the Kentucky Clean Fuels Coalition for its work to establish a natural gas fueling center and for its efficient energy prog-rams of other fuels.
Somerset was the only Kentucky city receiving an award for natural gas along with Waste Management of Louisville.
Mayor Girdler said that Somerset is operating a compressed natural gas fueling center both for the city and public use.
“The fueling center was the first one in Kentucky and the operation is receiving state and national recognition for Somerset’s pioneering effort in energy development,” Girdler said through a press release from the city.
Somerset is operating six natural gas vehicles and recently ordered a large sanitation truck that will use natural gas.
The Somerset Energy Center, a state-of-the-art energy development and research facility, is scheduled to start construction in 2013.
Mayor Eddie Girdler was presented the award by Bill Jacobs, Vice President of Air Group Control for United Parcel Service.
