Dorothy Popplewell, age 81, of Somerset, formerly of Russell Springs, passed from this life on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.
She was a retired laborer who worked at a laundry service in Cincinnati, Ohio and at Russell Sportswear.
Ms. Popplewell was an avid gardener, staunch Democrat and devoted viewer of political programming on CNN and C-Span. She believed in faith, family, hard work, education and equal justice for all. She encouraged her children to dream big and did everything she could, including sacrificing her own needs, to help them reach their dreams.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J.R. Popplewell; her son, Virthel Lee Popplewell; her parents, Oda and Ida Sullivan; her brothers, Royce Sullivan and Omar Sullivan; and sisters, Eunice Hunton and Olene Crabtree.
She is survived by a daughter, Brenda Popplewell, of Somerset; sisters Josie Hunton, of Marietta, Ga. and Aldean Ellis, of Faubush; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
Funeral services for Dorothy Popplewell will be at 1 p.m. CDST Tuesday at the Bernard Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Elvis Tucker officiating. Burial will be in the Popplewell Cemetery, Hwy. 76, Russell Springs.
Bernard Funeral Home in Russell Springs is in charge of the arrangements.
