Bro. Emmett Andrew “Andy” Sexton, 82, of the Ruth community of Pulaski County, Ky., passed away on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, Ky.
Born on June 5, 1927, in Whitesburg, Ky., he was the son of the late Worley and Rebecca Taylor Sexton. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, former pastor, and missionary. Bro. Sexton was a member and missionary under the authority of the South Irvine Baptist Church. He served 14 years at Faith Baptist Church in Covington, Ky., over four years at Ringgold Baptist Church in Somerset, Ky., 25 years as a missionary in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky, and organized five Baptist churches in 25 years.
Bro. Sexton is survived by two sons, Bro. Emmett Dewayne (and Cynthia) Sexton of Clarksville, Tenn., and Gregory Phillip (and Bernita) Sexton of Richmond, Ky.; a sister, Loretta Taylor of Owensville, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Deborah, Rhoda, Peter Andrew, Greg Jr., Christopher, Kevin, and Aaron; and 13 great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Worley and Rebecca Taylor Sexton; wife, Cleo Scott Sexton, whom he married on July 16, 1947, in Harlan, Ky.; four brothers, Orvil, Oscar, Arnold, and Ival Sexton; a half brother, Patton Taylor; and a sister, June Iles.
Visitation will be today, Nov. 24, at 6 p.m. at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home, 1046 West Highway 80, Somerset.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 25, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. Emmett Dewayne Sexton and Bro. Donnie Burford officiating.
Burial will be in the Clay Hill Cemetery.
The American Legion Post #38 Honor Guard will conduct full military honors.
The family requests expressions of sympathy be made to Kentucky Mountain Mission of South Irvine Baptist Church.
