Obituaries for Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013

Somerset — George Bottrell

George Dean Bottrell, age 83, of Somerset, Ky., departed this life on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013 at his residence.  

George, who was known to all his friends and family as “Dean,” was born on Feb. 11, 1930, in Decatur, Ill. to the late George and Esther Himstedt Bottrell. He married Ruth Day in Salem, Ky. on June 20, 1953. Dean held degrees from the University of Illinois and from Lexington Theological Seminary and was for a time a minister in the Disciples of Christ, pastoring churches in Sebree and Louisa, Ky. After leaving the ministry, he worked for over 25 years as a soil scientist with the USDA's Soil Conservation Service.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Somerset, Ky.; one son, David Dean Bottrell, of Los Angeles, Calif.; and one daughter, Mary Esther Bottrell, of Somerset, Ky.

Dean was a very devout Christian, who along with his wife, Ruth, opened their home to many children over the years, providing shelter, counsel and love to so many. It's difficult to know how many “grandchildren” and “nieces” and “nephews” he leaves behind.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Wayne Bottrell and Merl Bottrell.

Visitation for Mr. Bottrell will be on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home.

His funeral service will follow the visitation at 2 p.m. with Bro. Emmett Lanham officiating. David Bottrell will give the eulogy.  

Burial will be in the Tanner Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be David Bottrell, George Bottrell, Joshua Maynard, and Richard Bereczky. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Weatherly and Hannah Weatherly.

The family requests expressions of sympathy be made to the Pulaski County Alzheimer Center, where Dean and his wife volunteered weekly for over a decade.

Margaret Littrell

Mrs. Margaret Burge Littrell, daughter of the late Chester and Etta Young Burge, was born at Science Hill, Ky. on Dec. 2, 1915, and she departed this life on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013 in Somerset, Ky. having attained the age of 98 years.

She was united in marriage to Mr. Jeffery Littrell, and he preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Jeffery Lee (and Margaret) Littrell of Somerset, Ky. and Stephen (and Loretta) Littrell, also of Somerset, Ky.; one grandchild, Danielle (and Darren) Neal; a step-grandchild, Jason Heath; and a special niece, Sue Schnurr.

Other than her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by one brother, Lester Burge; her stepmother, Pansy Burge; and one step-grandchild, Bobbi Jo.

Margaret was a homemaker, a member of the Somerset First Christian Church, and a member of the Science Hill Garden Club.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the chapel of Pulaski Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Science Hill Cemetery.

The family of Mrs. Margaret Burge Littrell will receive friends at the Pulaski Funeral Home after 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013.

In lieu of flowers the family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Somerset First Christian Church.

Elsie Pike

Elsie Jane Pike, age 75, of Nancy, Ky. departed this life on Monday, Dec. 16, 2013 at the Jean Waddle Hospice Care Center in Somerset.

Elsie was born on June 27, 1938, in Nancy, Ky. to the late Carsie Oliver and Lucy Worley Fox. She lived and worked in Cincinnati, Ohio for over 20 years. After moving back to Kentucky in 1975, she worked for the Tecumseh Products Company for 26 years. Elsie was a member of the Tateville Baptist Church. She loved gardening and cooking, and she enjoyed quilting.

She is survived by her husband, Dillard “Eddie” Pike, whom she married in Tenn. on Aug. 15, 1980; her son, Steve (and Anita) Tucker, of Nancy, Ky.; her stepson, Christopher Edwin (and Tracey) Pike, of Jamestown, Ky.; her stepdaughter, Gina Pike, of Adair County; two brothers, Paul (and Jean) Fox and Wesley Fox, both of Nancy, Ky.; three sisters, Ruth Weddle and Gladys Molden, both of Nancy, and Tina (and Harold) Hampton, of Burnside, Ky.; a sister-in-law, Barbara Fox, of Nancy, Ky.; two grandchildren, Joshua (and Chelsea)Tucker, of Bowling Green, Ky., and Kyra Tucker, of Nancy; two step-grandchildren, Ethan Pike and Casey Pike, both of Jamestown, Ky.; and many nieces and nephews.

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Ernest Fox, Winfred Lonzo Fox, Richard Fox, Milford Fox and Ralph Fox, who died in infancy; and one sister, Ada Cook.

Visitation will be on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013 at 4 p.m. for the family and 5 p.m. for friends at the chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home.

Elsie's funeral service will be held on Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. James Floyd and Bro. Troy Merrick officiating.

Interment will be in Mill Springs National Cemetery in Nancy, Ky.

The family requests expressions of sympathy be made to Tateville Baptist Church Youth Group.

Jesse Redmon

Jesse Vernon “Judge” Redmon, 86, of Somerset, Ky., passed away Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013 at Jean Waddle Care Center.

He was born in Nancy, Ky. on March 25, 1927, son of the late Oscar and Lola Burton Redmond. He built transmissions and was a U.S. Navy veteran.

He is survived by his fiancée, Leisa Corder of Somerset; six children, Roger Vernon Redmon of Burlington, Ky., Phillip Stanley Redmon of Douglasville, Ga., William Kiner Redmon of San Francisco, Calif., Jesse Matthew Redmon of Somerset, Ky., Martin Patrick Redmon of Oxford, Mass. and Landreth Lee McGlothlin of Somerset, Ky.; and Linda and Debbie Corder, whom he raised.

A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2013 at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home with Bro. Lowell Gossett officiating.

Burial will be in Lakeside Memorial Gardens with military honors by American Legion Post #38.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Thursday at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home.

Larry Stokes

Larry Evan Stokes, the son of Bobby and June Cromer Stokes, was born on Jan. 3, 1956 and he departed this life on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013 of an accidental drowning on Green River while hunting. He was 57 years of age.

He was united in marriage to Vicki Cummins Stokes on May 10, 2003 in

Somerset, Ky. She survives.

Other than his wife and parents, he is also survived by his two daughters, Emily (and Matt) Pannell of Bowling Green, Ky. and Erin (and Mark) Ketron of Elsmere, Ky.; one stepson, Rodney Todd and is fiancée, Nikki Lawson of Somerset, Ky.; four grandchildren, Daniel Ketron, Sarah Pannell, Rheagan and Rami Todd; his father and mother-in-law, Don Cummins of Mt. Vernon, Ky. and Nina Cummins of Somerset, Ky.; his aunts, Shirley Madden, Betty (and Jack) Lair, Donna (and Roy) Tincher, Judy (and Steve) Gressmire, Julia (and Jerry) Rash, Eav Mae (and Johnny) Toby; his uncles, Jimmy (and Janet) Cromer, Arthur (and Cricket) Fuson, and Jack (and Melinda) Stokes; and a host of other relatives and friends who mourn his passing.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bob and Marie Cromer, and Foster and Mavin Stokes.

Larry attended the Science Hill Nazarene Church where he was active with the worship/praise team. He was an amazing man of God who loved to testify of the miracles blessed by God, being a pancreatic cancer survivor. He was an avid sportsman and previously co-owned Midway Discount. He loved life, his family, he enjoyed making people smile, and he loved his special canine companion, Sassy, his 15 lb. white poodle.

Larry was a 1974 graduate of Somerset High School and a graduate of Sue Bennett College of London, Ky. He was a former office a manger for an orthopedic office, he was minister of music at Lake Cumberland Nazarene Church and the First Church of God for many years. He was also earned the Rank of Eagle Scout and achieved the Order of the Arrow while a member of Troop 82.

The family will receive friends at the Science Hill Church of the Nazarene on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013 after 5 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the Science Hill Nazarene Church with Bro. Harry Varn, Bro. Gene Wells and Dr. Curtis Sellers officiating.  

Entombment will follow the funeral services at Lakeside Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers the family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Hope Lodge, The Green County Rescue Squad or the Taylor County Rescue Squad.

The family of Mr. Larry Stokes would also like to publicly acknowledge their appreciation for the rescue squads of Taylor and Green Counties and everyone else who assisted in the rescue and recovery endeavors for Larry, and for the compassion and kindness shown to the family during this time.

Mickey Whitaker

Mickey Stan Whitaker, age 60, of Somerset, Ky. departed this life on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013 at his residence.

He was born on Sept. 9, 1953 in Somerset, Ky. to the late Thurman Lee and Carrie Velma Whitaker. Mickey married Lisa Beshears on July 1, 1978. He was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church. He was an employee of the Communities at Oakwood in Somerset and a former employee of Tecumseh Products of Somerset.

Mickey is survived by his wife, Lisa; his son, Eric Keith (and Jerrica Sue) Whitaker, of Somerset, Ky.; his daughter, Shawna Kay (and Sean) Whitaker Lillard, of Richmond, Ky.; six brothers, Cecil (and Virginia) Whitaker, of Los Angeles, Calif., Dale (and Peggy) Whitaker, of Nashville, Tenn., Butch Whitaker, of Somerset, Ky., Danny (and Jan) Whitaker, of Somerset, Ky., and Steve Whitaker and George Whitaker, both of Indianapolis, Ind.; six sisters, Hazel Whitaker, Norma (and Joe) Price, Janette (and Wade) Phelps, Patty (and Denton) Ping, Tammy (and Kenny) Glover and Jodi (and Doug) Hart, all of Somerset, Ky.; five granddaughters, Destiny Hall, Summer Whitaker, Lacy Whitaker, Cailey Whitaker and Aubree Whitaker; two grandsons, Eric James Whitaker and Wesley Walker Lillard; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Ryan Whitaker.

Visitation for Mickey will be on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at 6 p.m. at the chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home.  

His funeral service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. Darry Hatfield officiating.

Interment will be in Lakeside Memorial Gardens.  

Members of Mickey's family will serve as pallbearers.
