Somerset — Jamie Helton

James Millard “Jamie” Helton, 43, Jonesborough, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014 in the Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City, Tenn. after a brief illness.

He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He grew up in Somerset, Ky. and then moved to Jonesborough where he had lived for a number of years. He was employed as an LPN at the Life Care Center of Gray. He served in the United States Navy. He loved to ride his motorcycle, he had compassion for his patients, and he was an avid outdoorsman.

Jamie was preceded in death by his father, Millard Helton.

He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Jimmy Deese, Sr.

Survivors include his wife, Tracy Dalton Helton; three daughters, Jaelindsey Kaye Gentry and husband Ryan, Somerset, Ky., and Chelsea Rae Banks and Demi Brianna Helton, both of Jonesborough; four grandchildren, Blakley Garland, Bristol Jones, London Bishop and Avery Broyles; his mother, Patsy Boyatt Deese, Somerset, Ky.; his stepbrother, Jimmy Deese, Bryson City, N.C.; two stepsisters, Cindy Fowler and husband Mike, and Pam Dickerson and husband Steve, both of Charlotte, N.C.; and his father and mother-in-law, William Terrel and Aileen Dalton, Somerset, Ky.

There will be a Celebration of Life service for Jamie on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the banquet hall of the Best Western Hotel, 2406 N. Roan Street, Johnson City, Tenn.

The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to his friends and co-workers of Life Care, Gray, Mandy Rocker, Doug and JoAnn Ramsey, and Alanna Snodgrass .

Danny Patterson

Danny T. Patterson, age 59 of Somerset, Ky. passed away on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014.

He was born on May 14, 1954 in Lexington, Ky. to the late Hubert Sr. and Ada Marie Johnson Gilmore.

Danny was a self-employed mechanic and he enjoyed fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Danny T. Patterson, Jr.; and two brothers, Lawrence Patterson and Johnny Gilmore.

He is survived by one daughter, Sarah (Timothy Jr.) Lynch of Monticello, Ky.; three brothers, Hubert Gilmore of Somerset, Ky., Fred (Marsha) Gilmore of Somerset, Ky. and George “Buddy” Gilmore" (Kristie Johnson) of Somerset, Ky.; three sisters, Patricia “Lucille” (James) Hay of Somerset, Ky., Rose (Donald) Slaughter of Somerset, Ky., and Minnie Peyton of Knoxville, Tenn.; one grandson, Timothy Lynch III.

He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 after 6 p.m. in the chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home with Bro. James Bartleston officiating.

Burial will follow in the Southern Oaks Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Danny T. Patterson Funeral Fund, c/o Southern Oaks Funeral Home, 2110 W. Hwy. 914, Somerset, Ky. 42503.

Donna Phelps

Donna Kaye Phelps, age 53 of Slate Branch community, passed away on Friday, Jan. 10, 2014 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

She was born on May 5, 1960 in Barbourville, Ky. to the late George and Myrtle Williamson Hibbard.

Donna was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Teresa Ann Hibbard.

She is survived by her husband, Gary Phelps; one stepdaughter, Ashley Phelps of the Slate Branch community; one brother, Owen (Amanda) Hibbard of Williamsburg, Ky.; one sister, Debbie (Scott) Martin of Barbourville, Ky.; mother-in-law, Glenda Phelps of Somerset, Ky.; step-grandson, Jaxon Parker Gumm; brother-in-law, Bill (Shelly) Phelps of Somerset, Ky.; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Canada of Somerset, Ky., Pearl (Danny) Albright of Somerset, Ky., and Sue Franse of Tenn.; nephews, Jared Martin and Cody Crawford; and nieces, Ashley (Jason) Hibbard Engle, Raven Martin, Makayla Hibbard and Whitney Crawford.

She is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 after 6 p.m. in the chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home and again on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Pleasant View Baptist Church in Barbourville, Ky.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the Pleasant View Baptist Church in Barbourville with Bro. Bobby Abner officiating.

S. Wayne Rowe

S. Wayne Rowe, age 44, of Juniper Drive in Waynesburg, Ky., formerly of Butler County, Ohio, passed away Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014 at his residence.

Honoring S. Wayne’s wishes, cremation rites have been honored.

A memorial service will be held 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014 at Barnett & Demrow Funeral Home in Waynesburg, Ky. with Bro. Brad King officiating the service.

The visitation will be held at 4 p.m. until service time.

Andrew Slavey

Andrew Lee Slavey, age 93, of White Lily, Ky., departed this life on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014 at Somerwoods Nursing and Rehab Center.

Visitation for Mr. Slavey will be on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014 at 6 p.m. at the chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home.

His funeral service will be held on Monday, Jan. 13, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. with Bro. Jeff Griffith officiating.

Interment will be in Lakeside Memorial Gardens.

Gracie Smith

Gracie Oleta McGowan Zimmerman Smith, age 90, of Somerset, Ky., departed this life on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

Gracie was born on Oct. 19, 1923 in Jabez, Ky. to the late Grover L. and Ella Smith McGowan. She was a foster grandparent for The Communities at Oakwood of Somerset, Ky. for 17 years.

She is survived by her sons, Ronnie (and Judy) Zimmerman, of Science Hill, Ky. and Danny Joe (and Libby) Zimmerman, of Somerset, Ky.; her stepdaughter, Doris Keller, of Indianapolis, Ind.; a brother,  Grover Leondas McGowan, of Indianapolis, Ind.; her sister, Amy Gertrude Polston, of Somerset, Ky.; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Gracie was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Joseph Daniel Zimmerman; second husband, Lucian Smith; an infant son, Elvis J. Zimmerman; her stepson, James Smith; four brothers, Ezra, Ova, and Marvin McGowan, and an infant brother, Falus McGowan; six sisters, Tina Stephens, Beatrice Stephens, Alverta Polston, Flonnie Polston, Elsie Wiggington and Mary Bell Polston; and a great-grandson, Damian Edwards.

Visitation will be on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at 6 p.m. at the chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home and on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014 at 12 p.m.

Gracie's funeral service will follow the visitation on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Bro. Alonzo Wiggington and Bro. Mark Polston will officiate the service. Music will be provided by Calvary Separate Baptist Church Singers and pianist Oreda Harris.

Interment will be in Military Springs Cemetery, Jabez, Ky.  

Pallbearers will be Gracie's grandsons and nephews.

The family request donations be made to the Military Springs Cemetery Fund.
