Somerset — Edna Phelps

Edna Pearl Phelps, age 97, of the Barnesburg community, departed this life on Monday, Nov. 25, 2013 at her residence.

Edna was born in Dahl, Ky. on May 21, 1916 to the late William and Laura Arnold Burdine. She was a self-employed caregiver.

She was united in marriage to Earl Adkins on Dec. 31, 1933. They had three daughters together and were married until the time of his death on June 10, 1941.  

She met Edward Ellis Phelps afterward and on July 17, 1947, they were married. They have three daughters from their union.  

Edna was a loving Christian and faithful mother, grandmother and friend. She taught her daughters to first be friends as well as sisters, to be Christian mothers and be there for people in need.  Her love for the Lord Jesus Christ gave her the wisdom to lead her family through the years.

She is survived by four of her daughters, Wilma Gail (and Ronnie) Hail, of Somerset, Ky., Edwinna Rose (and Maurice) Daulton, of Somerset, Ky., Sara Lynn (and Sonny) Coffey, also of Somerset, Ky., and Susan (and Arnie) Engel, of Fairfield, Ohio; 12 grandsons, Danny Whitaker, Scott Hail, Sammy Hail, Shannon Hail, John Patrick Hail, Greg Hamm, Brian Whitaker, Joshua Engel, Trampas Newberry, Stephen Newberry, Mitchell Coffey and Brandon Coffey; one granddaughter, Jennifer Hamm Trotter; 17 great-grandchildren, Monica Whitaker, Megan Jones, Jason Whitaker, Joshua Whitaker, Christopher Hail, Cameron Hail, Kayleigh Brooks Hail, Ally Jo Hail, Mary Beth Hamm, Hunter Hamm, Anthony Dale Whitaker, Trampas Lee Newberry, Hana Newberry, Robert Newberry, Grace Newberry, Danielle Newberry and Matthew Newberry; and one great-great-grandson, Eric Whitaker.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Earl Adkins; second husband, Edward Ellis Phelps; two daughters, Phyllis Earlene Adkins and Barbara Gay Adkins Gard; three brothers, Lewis Burdine, Burt Norton and James Barnes; her sister, Bonnie Jewel Poynter; and a grandson, Joseph Linville Whitaker.

Visitation for Edna Pearl Phelps will be on Friday, Nov. 29, 2013 at 5 p.m. at the chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home.

Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. Tony Hall and Bro. Austin Campbell officiating.

Interment will be in the Barnesburg Cemetery.

Edna's grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family requests expressions of sympathy be made to Barnesburg Baptist Church or Hospice of Lake Cumberland.
