Thelma Sowder

Thelma Opal Thomas Sowder, 101, passed away Monday September 9, 2013 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. 
She was born on May 25, 1912 in Faubush, Ky. to the late Joseph and Lucy Rainwater Thomas.  She was an active member of Somerset First Baptist Church and retired from General Electric. A graduate of Somerset High School Class of 1934 and  taught Sunday School to five year olds for over 30 years. Thelma always put the needs of others above her own and was always an avid prayer warrior. 
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ballard Lewis Sowder, whom she married on
November 25, 1947; one son, Ronald Sowder; one daughter, Louise Sowder; three brothers, Edwin Thomas, Ralph Thomas and Joseph Thomas Jr. Six sisters, Dorothy Thomas Breading, Ruby Foster, Alma Stermer, Vivian Thomas, Pauline Thomas and Betsy Thomas; and two sons-in-law, Harvey Swim and R. Dean Burkett. 
She is survived by one son, Lynn (and Joyce) Sowder of Somerset, Ky.; two daughters, Kara Bradley Burkett of Sevierville, Tenn. and Betty Swim of Corbin, Ky.; two sisters, Ovalene Morgan of Loveland, Ohio and Aldena Palmer of Dale, Arkansas. She was also survived by 10 grandchildren and eight great -grandchildren. 
Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. today in the Serenity Chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home. 
Funeral Services will be held Friday September 13, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. in the Serenity Chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home with Bro. Troy McGahan and Bro. David Pendley officiating. 
Burial will be in Lakeside Memorial Gardens.  
Pallbearers will be Jack Chesser, Alex Smith, Austin Smith, Bradley D. Burkett, John R. Mounce, Mike Velez, Pierce Foster and Kenny Palmer. Honorary Pallbearers, Junior Thomas, Jimmy Foster, Donny Thomas and Jeff Breading. 
Southern Oaks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
