Eugene Mitchell

Somerset — Eugene Mitchell, age 83, of the Slate Branch community, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013 at his residence.

He was born Sept. 27, 1929 in the Pole Bridge Community of Nancy, Ky. to the late Grayson “Pete” and Wanda Fitzgerald Mitchell.

He was a member of Slate Branch Baptist Church where he was an active member, serving as a deacon and former treasurer, and served on the building committee. He was a member of the Russell Masonic Lodge #284 and he was a Mason for over 50 years. He retired as Supervisor of Maintenance of 34 years with the Corps of Engineers. Eugene enjoyed gardening, bee keeping, fishing and orchard growing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Luther Mitchell, Norton Mitchell and Russell Mitchell; and a sister, Lula Bell Mayfield.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Sylvia Randolph Mitchell, whom he married on Aug. 19, 1949. To this union they were blessed with one son, Ronnie (Carolyn) Mitchell of Somerset, Ky.; five grandchildren, Kevin (Malynda) Mitchell, Kelly Mitchell, Kasey Compton, Kolton Mitchell and Kyra Mitchell; and one great-grandchild, Maime Compton.

He is also survived by three brothers, James (Beverly) Mitchell of Somerset, Ky., Roy (Brenda) Mitchell of the Slate Branch community, and Brent Wayne (Carrie) Mitchell of Paletine, Ill.; and four sisters, Inez Jones of Haggertown, Md., Lela Mae Meyers of the Slate Branch community, Roberta (Bro. Elmo) Mounce of Somerset, Ky.; and Elsie Roberts of the Slate Branch community.

Visitation will be held Friday, Aug. 16, 2013 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Chapel A of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.

The Russell Masonic Lodge #284 will conduct Masonic Rights Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Chapel A of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013 at 11 a.m. in Chapel A of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in the Floyd Family Cemetery in the Slate Branch community.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Slate Branch Baptist Church Youth Group.

Southern Oaks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.  

James Napier Jr.

James Napier Jr., age 75 of Somerset, Ky., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013 at his residence.

He was born March 19, 1938 in Melvin, Ky. to the late James Sr. and Melissa Newsome Napier.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Pamela Hall.

He is survived by his daughter, Denise Watkins of Richlands, N.C.; 11 brothers and sisters; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A private funeral service will be held by the family.

Southern Oaks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

  • Viola Nichols

    Viola Keith Nicholas was born Sept. 5, 1921 to the late William and Alice Jones Keith and she departed this life to her eternal home on April 7, 2014, having attained the age of 92 years.
    She was a devoted wife to the late Wesley Nicholas for 50 years. She was a faithful member at Grave Hill Baptist Church where she taught the Ladies Sunday School class for many years. She retired from the Pulaski County Board of Education. After retirement she served as a foster grandparent at Oakwood Training Facility for special needs children. She also volunteered at the Burnside Elementary preschool program, giving her time, talents and love to the 3 and 4 year old children whom she adored.
    Viola is survived by two daughters, Diana (and Austin) Alton, and Tana (and Tom) Chesney; one son, Rex Nicholas; and three brothers, Robert (and Barbara) Keith, Danny (and Ann) Keith, and David (and Ellen) Keith.  
    She was also blessed with many grandchildren and all were special to her.
    Other than her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by two sons, Wayne Nicholas and Gale Nicholas; two grandsons, Ricky Alton and Michael Nicholas; a granddaughter, Karen Alton Cogdill; and the following siblings: Alicie Super, Emerine Neeley, Mattie Keith, Maggie Godsey, Bertha Duncan, Clara Helton, Otis Keith, Clora Hardwick, Vergie Keith, Grover Keith, Mertie Yeskie, Lowell Keith, Joyce Sellers, Bill Keith, and Jim Keith; and the following step-siblings: Murphy Owens, Geneva Hill, Louise Fritts, and Reva Jones.
    Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2014 at the chapel of the Pulaski Funeral Home with Bro. Darry Hatfield and Bro. Doyle Worley officiating.
    Burial will follow in the Grave Hill Cemetery.
    The family of Mrs. Viola Keith Nicholas will receive friends at the Pulaski Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2014.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to The Grave Hill Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 85, Tateville, Ky. 42558, or Hospice of Lake Cumberland, 100 Parkway Drive, Somerset, Ky. 42503.
