Somerset — Nellie Bogle-Gaines

Mrs. Nellie F. Bogle-Gaines of Louisville, KY, formally of Somerset, Ky., passed away suddenly on October 20, 2013 in Louisville, Ky.

She was born on December 11, 1929 to Joseph A. and Addie Gunn Bogle.

Mom attended Dunbar Elementary School and Dunbar High School before pursuing a lifelong commitment in the medical field, first as a maid at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Louisville, Ky., and then as an X-ray tech at St. Joseph’s before relocating to Somerset to work at the old Somerset City Hospital, currently known as the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. She devoted over 30 years to her profession before retiring in 1993 due to illness.

Mom accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the First Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. W.B. Woods.

Nellie met and married William E. Gaines, Sr. on December 24th, 1963.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Addie Bogle; husband William E. Gaines, Sr.; and siblings Deolia M, Joseph A., Orangealena, June, Mary Elizabeth, and John E.

She leaves to cherish the memories of her life a sister, Mrs. Clementine Munday; children Stanley K. Bogle, Susan D. Bogle, Raymond A. Gaines, and William E. Gaines, Jr.; four grandchildren, Nycole Barnes (and Stevie), Kimberlee Reid (and Russell), Tamara Bogle, and Alexzander Bogle; six great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and special friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 26, 2013 at the Pulaski Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in the Stanford-Pike Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Pulaski Funeral Home from 3-9 p.m. today.

Pulaski Funeral Home is honored to be in charge of all arrangements.



Elsie Foley

Elsie Foley, age 85, of Somerset, KY, departed this life on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at Somerwoods Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Arrangements are pending at this time.

Otis Hatfield

Otis Hatfield, 69, of Burnside, Ky., passed away Wednesday October 23, 2013 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

He was born on March 29, 1944 in Fonda, KY to the late Thomas Robert and Sidney Johnson Hatfield.

He is survived by his wife, Rosanna Carlotta Hatfield of Burnside, KY.

A private memorial service will be held by the family at a later date.

Southern Oaks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangments.



Gary Jones

Gary Jones, 69, of Junction City, Ky., passed away Monday, October 21, 2013 at his residence.

He was born in Eubank, Ky., on August 18, 1944, son of the late Delmar and Leona Brown Jones.  He was an auto mechanic.

He is survived by two sons, Chad (and Viruna) St. John of Los Angeles, Calif., and Gary Jones Jr., of Plant City, Fla.; one brother, Dwayne (and Laura) Jones of Danville, Ky.; and four grandchildren, Erica, Skyler, Jacob and River.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, October 28, 2013 at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home with Bro. James Collison officiating.

Burial will be in Woodstock Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Monday at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home.

Morris & Hislope Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Susan Nicholas

Susan Rae Nicholas, 42, of Science Hill, Ky., passed away Monday, October 21, 2013 at her residence.

She was born in Somerset, Ky., on July 2, 1971, daughter of  R.V. Mize and the late Barbara Glover Mize. She was a beautician for JC Penney Salon and a member of Barnesburg Baptist Church.  

She is survived by her husband, Richie Nicholas; one daughter, Chelsea Leann Nicholas, both of Science Hill; her father, R.V. Mize (and Louise Stogsdill) of Somerset; and two sisters, Cindy (and Bobby) Gholson of Somerset and Angela Gail (and Mark) Leigh of Eubank.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Barbara Glover Mize and step-son, Jordan Nicholas.

A funeral service will be held at 12 noon Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home with Bro. Patrick Butcher officiating.

Burial will be in Lakeside Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be after 10 AM Saturday at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home.

Callis Thomas

Callis A. Thomas, beloved husband of Christine (nee Garner) Thomas for 57 years of marriage; loving father of Mark A. Thomas and Kathy Thomas; adoring grandfather of Dale Thomas Dawson and Sydney Grace Brown. Mr. Thomas passed away very peacefully at home, October 18, 2013 at the age of 77.

He was also survived by Richard (and Linda) Thomas, Steven Thomas, Freida (and Bobby) Gosser-Bernard, Carol Ann (and Eugene) Wilson; two special sisters-in-law, Opal Thomas and Edna Thomas; many nieces and nephews; and also his very special stepmother, Helen Frankum Thomas.

He is preceded in death by his mother Enola Brockman Thomas; father Oral Thomas; and two brothers, Dock Carson Thomas and Olan Dale Thomas.

Mr. Thomas was a member of New Haven Missionary Baptist Church and a former Trustee with the Church. He was also a longstanding member of Bradley's Pleasure Church in Nancy, Ky. He joined the Marines in 1956, and served 4 years. In 1959, he began his career at Procter and Gamble.  He retired from the company after over 40 years in the early 2000s. In 1971, he purchased his first tractor & trailer for his brother. This began the future empire of Thomas Trucking that has supplied hundreds of jobs for many families throughout the years.  

He leaves behind many special friends; racers; co-workers and dedicated employees.

A visitation was held at the New Haven Missionary Baptist Church, 2417 Indian Mound Avenue, Norwood, Ohio 45212 on Tuesday, October 22, 2013.

A visitation will be held today at 10 a.m. at the chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 1 p.m.  Pastor Mike Raines will officiate the service.

Entombment will be in the Bradley's Pleasure Cemetery.

Full Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 38 Honor Guard. Members of

the Thomas family will serve as pallbearers.  

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Haven Missionary Baptist Church or Bradley's Pleasure Cemetery.
