Somerset — Nancy Jones

Nancy Vaught Jones, 73, of Fairway Lane in Somerset, Ky., passed away Sunday, November 3, 2013.

She was born in Somerset, Ky., on March 6, 1940, daughter of the late Hartford and Betty Gooch Vaught. She was a secretary for Meece Middle School and a member of First Baptist Church for 54 years. She also worked for the Somerset Housing Authority and JC Penney in jewelry after her retirement.

She is survived by two daughters, Penny Jones (and David) Deatrick of Louisville, Ky., and Cindy Jones (and Bryan) Ledford of Versailles, Ky.; one brother, Jamie (and Deanna) Vaught of Middlesboro, Ky.; three grandchildren, Carl Ledford, Anna Ledford and Ross Deatrick; niece and nephew, Janna and Warren Vaught, and many special friends that blessed her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James R. "Jim" Jones, and her parents.

A funeral service will be held at 12 noon Friday at First Baptist Church of Somerset with Dr. French Harmon and Bro. David Pendley officiating.

Burial will be in Science Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held after 5 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Somerset.

David Lee

David W. Lee, 84, of Somerset, Ky. and formerly of Vanlue, Ohio, died at 8:55 a.m.

Sunday, November 3, 2013 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset, Ky.

Born August 23, 1929 in Carey, Ohio, he was the son of the late Russell S. and Cora M. Walter Lee. He married Anna Verne Smith, June 14 1958. She survives in Somerset, Ky.

Surviving are three children, Rebecca Anne (and Dan) Perkins of Greensburg, Ind., Esther Catharine (and Gregory) Barron of Somerset, Ky., and John (and Sarah) Lee of Fishers, Ind.; four grandchildren; a brother, John (and Betty) Lee of Vanlue; two sisters, Mary (Mike) Norris of Mt. Vernon, OH, and Martha (and Larry) Owsley of Rocky Point, NC; sisters in-law, Donna Lee of Carey, Ohio and Marilyn Lee of Upper Sandusky, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Arthur, Claren, and James Lee.

He was a Carey High School graduate and earned his BA from Asbury University

and Masters of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary.

A member of West Independence United Methodist Church, he and his wife were involved with missionary service for 32 years through World Gospel Mission of Marion, Ind.

David enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and crossword puzzles, being around family, and tea time with Anna Verne.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, November 8, 2013 at West Independence United Methodist Church in West Independence where visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service with Rev. Steve Fisher officiating.

Burial will follow at Lee Cemetery near Vanlue, Ohio.

Memorial contributions may be given to World Gospel Mission or West Independence United Methodist Church in David's name in care of Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St. Carey, Ohio. 43316.

Glenda McQueen

Glenda McQueen, 76, of Somerset, Ky., passed away Tuesday November 5, 2013.

She was born on May 20, 1937 in Somerset, KY. to the late John Benjamin and Bernetta Brewster Girdler.  

Glenda was saved by the Grace of God at Slate Branch Baptist Church and belongs to Denham Street

Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband Jackie W. McQueen, whom she married on October 16, 1965 in Wartburg, Tenn., and three children, Bev (and Jim) Mitchell and Tina Baker, all of

Somerset, Ky., and Rick (and Judy) Stringer of Nancy, Ky.; nine grandchildren, Jaye Mitchell, Jeremy Mitchell, Erica (and Jason) Denney, Melissa Alexander, Becky Stringer, Jane (and Brad) Wiles, Nicole (and Maurice) Powers, all from Somerset, Ky., Shane (and Jessica) Wilson from Smithfield, Ky., and    Jamie (and Jill) Baker from Mauston, Wisc.; two step- grandchildren, Adam (Maranda) Brown,

and Serena Cundiff; 31 great-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; one sister, Lucille (and Lawerence) Rainwater Boswell, Ind.; and lots of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Besides her parents, Bernetta and John Girdler, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Sherry Lynn Stringer and Kathy Lynn Baer; one great-grandchild, Jordan Powers; four sisters, Martha Girdler, Dortha Smith, Sue Walker, and Eva Mae Bullock; three brothers, Ben Girdler, Robert Girdler, and Eugene Girdler; one half-brother, Olno Girdler; and one son-in-law, Mike Baker.

Visitation will be held Thursday, November 7, 2013 after 6 p.m. in the chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, November 8, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home with Bro. Jeff Griffith and Bro. David Muse officiating.

Burial will be in the Lakeside Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Girdler, Mark Alexander, Jaye Mitchell, Jeremy Mitchell, Shane Wilson, Dewayne Walker, Mike Baker II and Brayden Mitchell.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Denham Street Baptist Church Building Fund, 400 Denham St., Somerset, Ky., 42501.

Angela Smith

Angela Lynn Smith, 43, of Nicholasville, Ky., and formerly of Somerset, Ky., passed away Monday November 4, 2013 at the UK Hospital.

She was born on November 26, 1969 in Somerset, Ky., to Marvin Smith and Carole Ruth Denney Morton.

She was a former cook  at the Crestview Nursing Home and of the Southern Baptist faith.

She is survived by her parents, Marvin (and Judy) Smith of Somerset, Ky., and Carole Ruth Denney Morton of Nicholasville, Ky.; one brother, Clarence Tracy (and Kim) Smith of Somerset, Ky.; and one sister, Amanda Kingsley of Nicholasville, Ky.; special friends, Melissa King of Lexington, Ky., and Beverly Morgan of Somerset, Ky.; a special cousin, Tammy Denney of Somerset, Ky., and a special niece, Marissa Kingsley of Winchester, Ky.; one nephew, Austin Smith and one niece, Summer Nicole Smith, both of Somerset, Ky. She is also survived by several aunts, unles and couisins.

Visitation will be held Wednesday November 6, 2013 after 6 p.m. in the chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home with Bro. Jeff Griffith officiating.

Burial will be in the Smith Grove Cemetery.

Garnett Williams

Garnett Ray Williams, 79, Somerset, Ky., resident (former Carroll County, MD resident) Garnett Ray Williams, died November 2, at his home in Ky.

 Mr. Williams was born August 27, 1934 in East Bernstadt, Ky., to Harve L. Williams and Lucretia Johnson-Bales Williams.

 Garnett graduated from East Bernstadt High School in 1952. He married Wilma Callahan on April 18, 1957 in Jellico, Tenn. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an Air Traffic Controller from 1952-1956. After basic training at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX., Garnett attended Technical School at Keesler AFB, MS. His tours of duty included two years at Yakota Air Base in Japan, and Altus AFB in Oklahoma.

 After his discharge, he moved to Baltimore, MD where he was employed by Baltimore Gas and Electric as a Power Systems Operator for 33 years, retiring in 1990. Garnett lived in Carroll County, MD for 33 years when he retired and moved to Pulaski County, KY. While Garnett & Wilma were raising their four children in Maryland, he was also instrumental in organizing as President and coaching boys youth basketball for nine years in the Carroll County Basketball League.

 In retirement, his joy in life was spoiling his 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Garnett loved to follow University of Kentucky basketball. He also passed down a time honored tradition of attending the Kentucky High School “Sweet 16” boys basketball tournament in Lexington, Ky., for 33 years, 31 years consecutively. Garnett was also very active as a Trustee on the Homecoming Committee, serving his childhood hometown in Pittsburgh, Ky.

 Garnett is survived by his wife, Wilma (nee Callahan) of Nancy, Ky.; his daughter, Jeanene Williams Dombrowski (and husband Randy) of Alpharetta, Ga.; sons Robert Bruce Williams (and Terry Gibson) of Sykesville, Md., James Daniel Williams (and wife Sheila) of Orlando, Fla., and David Wayne Williams of Nancy, Ky.; brother L.B. Williams (and wife Georgia) of Omaha, Neb.; special nephew John Nose of London, Ky.; grandchildren Robby Williams, Justin Williams, Nicky Williams Rosa, David Wayne and Brittney Williams, Chad Michael Williams, Joshua Adam Williams, Rachael Marie Williams, Spencer Ray Williams, Jordan Rae Dombrowski, Connor James Williams; great-grandchildren Keira Nicole Rosa, Cayden Michael and Chase Garnett Williams, and Jacob Rylan Williams.

 Garnett was preceded in death by Harve L. and Lucretia Williams; sisters Eula V. Williams, Blanche Williams Phillips, Ruby Maude Williams, Florence Marie Bales Nose, and Wanda Elizabeth Williams Patton (and special brother-in-law Charles Patton); brothers Ronald Bales, Clarence Bales, Charles Williams, andHerbert Arthur Williams.

 In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Lake Cumberland Hospice.

 Bowling Funeral Home of London, Ky., will be handling arrangements.

Jonas York

Jonas York, 24, of Eubank, Ky., passed away Monday, November 4, 2013 at the UK Medical Center.

Arrangements are pending and will be announced later by Morris & Hislope Funeral Home.

  • Viola Nichols

    Viola Keith Nicholas was born Sept. 5, 1921 to the late William and Alice Jones Keith and she departed this life to her eternal home on April 7, 2014, having attained the age of 92 years.
    She was a devoted wife to the late Wesley Nicholas for 50 years. She was a faithful member at Grave Hill Baptist Church where she taught the Ladies Sunday School class for many years. She retired from the Pulaski County Board of Education. After retirement she served as a foster grandparent at Oakwood Training Facility for special needs children. She also volunteered at the Burnside Elementary preschool program, giving her time, talents and love to the 3 and 4 year old children whom she adored.
    Viola is survived by two daughters, Diana (and Austin) Alton, and Tana (and Tom) Chesney; one son, Rex Nicholas; and three brothers, Robert (and Barbara) Keith, Danny (and Ann) Keith, and David (and Ellen) Keith.  
    She was also blessed with many grandchildren and all were special to her.
    Other than her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by two sons, Wayne Nicholas and Gale Nicholas; two grandsons, Ricky Alton and Michael Nicholas; a granddaughter, Karen Alton Cogdill; and the following siblings: Alicie Super, Emerine Neeley, Mattie Keith, Maggie Godsey, Bertha Duncan, Clara Helton, Otis Keith, Clora Hardwick, Vergie Keith, Grover Keith, Mertie Yeskie, Lowell Keith, Joyce Sellers, Bill Keith, and Jim Keith; and the following step-siblings: Murphy Owens, Geneva Hill, Louise Fritts, and Reva Jones.
    Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2014 at the chapel of the Pulaski Funeral Home with Bro. Darry Hatfield and Bro. Doyle Worley officiating.
    Burial will follow in the Grave Hill Cemetery.
    The family of Mrs. Viola Keith Nicholas will receive friends at the Pulaski Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2014.
