Laura Victoria Alexander Grider, entered into eternal rest peacefully on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at the age of 88 after a prolonged battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Laura was born on January 3, 1926 in Burkesville, Ky., to the late Harry and Mattie Groves Alexander. Her family eventually moved to Somerset, Ky., where she met and married the late James William Grider, who preceded her in death in 1979. They shared 22 years of marriage and to this union, two children were born — Stanley Jerome Grider and Fredrick Kyle Grider.
Laura was employed at Beecher Hotel where she was the Head Seamstress. She also worked at Garrett's Tailor Shop for many years until she retired and devoted her time to her sons.
Laura was affectionately known to many as "Sister" and "Ma." Laura was the only sister to five brothers, which is why her brothers referred to her as "Sister." Many others called her "Ma" which is the name that Kyle initiated. Although Laura had two sons of her own, she always somehow found many other children to claim as her own.
Upon arriving to Somerset, she joined Davis Chapel A.M.E. Church where she served faithfully until her health declined. Her work in the church included secretary and treasurer for Sunday school. Her most passionate role in the church was overseeing the Usher Board.
Laura was a feisty, fun loving, and kind hearted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend that was cherished immensely by her family and all that knew her. As the Matriarch of the Alexander family, Laura was a God-fearing woman with a praying heart.
Laura was preceded in death by her brothers, Harry Alexander, Jr., John (J.W.) Alexander, Howard D. Alexander, Thomas Lee Alexander, and Joe Alexander (Becky).
Cherished memories of Laura will forever be in the hearts of her sons, Stanley J. Grider, Sr. (Sonya), Fredrick Kyle Grider; her four grandchildren, Chanel Ann Grider, Simone Elise Floyd, Stanley "Jay" Grider, Jr., and Saige Elise Grider; a devoted great-nephew Montrell Alexander, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Friday, May 2, 2014 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Davis Chapel, A.M.E. Church on Main Street in Somerset. Laura's funeral service will be held on Saturday morning, 11 a.m. at Davis Chapel, A.M.E. Church with Reverend Everhart Walker officiating and Reverend Harry Francis giving opening prayer.
Interment will be in the Waterview Cemetery in Burkesville, Ky.
Pallbearers will be Laura's nephews, Howard Alexander, Jr., Dennis Alexander, James Harry Alexander, Ricky Grider, Bill Garrett and Jimmy "Bo" Goggins. Dunbar Alumni will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
Lake Cumberland Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements for Laura Victoria Alexander Grider.
