Somerset — Warren Berry

Warren Ray Berry, 65, of Mt. Vernon, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2014 at the University of Arkansas For Medical Sciences Hospital in Little Rock, Ark., of complications from treatment of multiple myeloma.

He was a native of Rockcastle County, born to the late Herbert Berry and his mother Alta Todd Berry Lakes of Corbin. He was a member of the Berea United Methodist Church and was formerly a member of Highpoint Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Somerset, Ky. He retired in 2011 as a chartered financial consultant and certified life underwriter from Warren Berry & Associates in Somerset. He was a family man, he loved to fish, and he was an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan.

Mr. Berry is survived by his wife, Linda Smith Berry of Mt. Vernon; his son, Philip Berry (Stephanie) of Mt. Vernon; his mother, Alta Todd Berry Lakes of Corbin, Ky.; his sisters, Sandra Spenneberg of Darlington, Ind. and Wanda Campbell (W.L.) of Corbin, Ky.; and his brother, Kenneth Berry (Betty) of Berea.

Other than his father, he was preceded in death by a brother and his wife, Gordon (Linda) Berry.

Funeral services for Mr. Berry will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 at the Berea United Methodist Church with Rev. John Contini and Rev. Philip Bradley officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Highpoint Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 190 Longview Road, Somerset, Ky., and from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday at the Berea United Methodist Church.

Burial will follow in the Scaffold Cane Cemetery.

Jeffrey Claunch

Jeffrey Scott Claunch, 54, departed this life on Feb. 17, 2014 at his residence in Ferguson.  

Jeffrey was born in Somerset on July 15, 1959 to the late Hollis R. and Wilma Guy Claunch. Jeffrey attended the Emmanuel Christian Fellowship in Whitley City, Ky.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hollis R. and Wilma J. Guy Claunch.

He is survived by two sons, Brandon Claunch of Somerset and Phillip Claunch of Bowling Green, Ky.; one brother, Larry Claunch (Paula) of Somerset; and one sister, Vickie Hugenberg (Leo) of Lexington, Ky.

Also surviving are several aunts and uncles; numerous cousins; and best friends, Chuck Walton and Bennie Cooper.

Visitation for Jeffrey Claunch will be held on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the chapel of Somerset Undertaking Company and Crematory.

A celebration of life for Jeffrey Claunch will follow the visitation on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014 at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Somerset Undertaking Company and Crematory with Rev. Brent Ford officiating.

Interment will follow at the Pisgah Cemetery.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to God's Food Pantry, P.O. Box 259, Somerset, Ky., 42502.

James Clemons

James Owens Clemons, age 79 of Somerset, Ky., passed away on Monday, Feb. 17, 2014.

He was born on Jan. 3, 1935. He was the son of the late Barlow and Carrie Clemons of Jackson, Ky.

Mr. Clemons was a graduate of Lees Junior College at Jackson, Ky. and Eastern Kentucky University at Richmond, Ky. He was a former elementary school teacher and principal in Ohio, and he also taught at Science Hill. He was a member of the United States Air force. He was also a member of Sievers Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed Kentucky football, basketball, and golfing and fishing. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by five siblings, Willard Clemons of Jackson, Ky., William Barlow Jr. of Jackson, Ky., Dora Holbrook of Jackson, Ky., Oddis Clemons (Kay) of Connersville, Ind., and E.B. Clemons (Adna) of Somerset, Ky.

He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews; a good friend, Barbara Shepherd of Somerset, Ky.; and two very long-time special people, David and Eunice Sayers of Science Hill, Ky.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Barlow and Carrie Clemons of Jackson, Ky.; three sisters, Margaret Clemons Gross of Hartford City, Ind. and two infant sisters, Eula-Jean Clemons and Dorothy Lee Clemons; one brother, Thomas Lloyd Clemons of Montgomery, Ala.; one brother-in-law, Leonidas Holbrook of Jackson, Ky.; and one sister-in-law, Naomi (Arrowood) Clemons, of Jackson, Ky.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.

Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. with Bro. Edd Massey from First Baptist Church of Science Hill officiating.

Masonic services will be conducted by the Sievers Lodge #491.

Burial will be at Mill Springs National Cemetery in Nancy, Ky. with full military honors provided by the American Legion Post #38 Honor Guard.

Faye Dalton

Faye Dalton, age 66, of Nancy, Ky. passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014.  

Arrangements are pending at this time.

Helen Flynn

Helen Flynn, age 87 of Somerset, Ky. passed away on Tuesday, Feb.18, 2014.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, 2014 at the chapel of the Pulaski Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Lakeside Memorial Gardens.

The family of Mrs. Helen Flynn will receive friends at the Pulaski Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014.

Dollie Lutterbei

Dollie E. Lutterbei (nee Jasper), age 80, passed away February 14, 2014.

She was the beloved wife of the late Fred F. Lutterbei for 52 years; loving mother of Donna (Glen) O'Halloran; dear grandmother of Kristen O'Halloran, Katie (Shawn) Dugan and Claire (Joe Johnston) O'Halloran; cherished great-grandmother of Maeve and Tucker; and eldest sister of Gene, Carroll, Nelson, Nina, Debbie, Jody, Reta and Lin.

Visitation took place Monday, Feb. 17, 2014 at the Hodapp Funeral Home, 8815 Cincinnati-Columbus Rd., (Route. 42), in West Chester, Ohio.

Her funeral service took place Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, 2300 Wall St., Suite H., 45212, or to Hospice of Cincinnati, P.O. Box 633597, 45263.

Lila Maynard

Lila Lee Maynard, 75, of Somerset, Ky. went to be with our Lord and Savior

Jesus Christ on Feb. 18, 2014.  

She was born Nov. 15, 1938 in Betsy Layne, Ky. to Robert and Lillian Layne. She grew up in Betsy Layne and graduated from Betsy Layne High School. Lila was a member of Ringgold Baptist Church. She was a retired employee of K-Mart in Somerset, Ky. In Jan. 1960 she married Harvey Gene Maynard.

In addition to her husband she is survived by four children, Juanita Kidd, Harvey G. Maynard Jr. (Carol), Bridget Whitaker (Barry), and Bobby Maynard (Dorinda); nine grandchildren, Kathryn Woolley, Dustin Winchester (Maria), Tyler Kidd (Iesha), Jonathon Eldon, Cameron Maynard, Lauren Maynard, Benjamin Whitaker, Logan Maynard and Caden Maynard.; four great-grandchildren, Aidan Woolley, Lila Reese, Lyric Woolley, and Keira Kidd; three sisters, Jane Ratliff (Raymond) of Prestonsburg, Ky., Patricia Hall of Logansport Ind., and Jeanette Layne of Betsy Layne, Ky.; and a brother, William Layne (Dorothy) of Harold, Ky.

She also leaves a life-long friend, Nancy Marcum of Allen, Ky. Lila also leaves two nieces, Samantha Clark and Jamie Ratcliff; and three nephews, Michael Hall, Brian Layne, and Mike Walsh.

Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband’s parents, Harvey and Lorena Maynard; a brother-in-law, Claude Hall; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Walsh.

Visitation will be at Pulaski Funeral Home, Somerset, Ky. on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014 at Pulaski Funeral Home at 12 p.m.

Burial will follow in the Mill Springs Cemetery, Nancy, Ky.

Donations may be made to Ringgold Baptist Church in Lila's memory.

Charles Taylor

Charles E. Taylor, 92, of Somerset, formally of Camp Springs, Ky., died Feb. 15 at Somerwoods Nursing Home in Somerset, Ky.

He was an army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Ritter; second wife, Jean Wilson; third wife, Marilyn Miller; and granddaughter, Allison Taylor.

Survivors include his son, Chuck Taylor (Diane) of Alexandria; daughter, Mary Jo Muench (John) of Alexandria; five grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Joseph Church Camp Springs on March 1 at 11 a.m.

Burial is at St. Joseph Cemetery in Camp Springs.

Memorials may be made to Somerwoods Nursing Home, 555 Bourne Ave., Somerset, Ky., 42501, or donor's choice.

  • Viola Nichols

    Viola Keith Nicholas was born Sept. 5, 1921 to the late William and Alice Jones Keith and she departed this life to her eternal home on April 7, 2014, having attained the age of 92 years.
    She was a devoted wife to the late Wesley Nicholas for 50 years. She was a faithful member at Grave Hill Baptist Church where she taught the Ladies Sunday School class for many years. She retired from the Pulaski County Board of Education. After retirement she served as a foster grandparent at Oakwood Training Facility for special needs children. She also volunteered at the Burnside Elementary preschool program, giving her time, talents and love to the 3 and 4 year old children whom she adored.
    Viola is survived by two daughters, Diana (and Austin) Alton, and Tana (and Tom) Chesney; one son, Rex Nicholas; and three brothers, Robert (and Barbara) Keith, Danny (and Ann) Keith, and David (and Ellen) Keith.  
    She was also blessed with many grandchildren and all were special to her.
    Other than her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by two sons, Wayne Nicholas and Gale Nicholas; two grandsons, Ricky Alton and Michael Nicholas; a granddaughter, Karen Alton Cogdill; and the following siblings: Alicie Super, Emerine Neeley, Mattie Keith, Maggie Godsey, Bertha Duncan, Clara Helton, Otis Keith, Clora Hardwick, Vergie Keith, Grover Keith, Mertie Yeskie, Lowell Keith, Joyce Sellers, Bill Keith, and Jim Keith; and the following step-siblings: Murphy Owens, Geneva Hill, Louise Fritts, and Reva Jones.
    Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2014 at the chapel of the Pulaski Funeral Home with Bro. Darry Hatfield and Bro. Doyle Worley officiating.
    Burial will follow in the Grave Hill Cemetery.
    The family of Mrs. Viola Keith Nicholas will receive friends at the Pulaski Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2014.
