Somerset — Bentley Bullock

Bentley Jearl Bullock, 66, of Eubank, Ky., passed away Friday, January 10, 2014.

Arrangements are pending and will be announced later by Morris & Hislope Funeral Home.

Betty Godby

Betty Joan Messamore Godby, 75, of Somerset, Ky., passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2014, in the Jean Waddle Hospice Care Center at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

She was born on April 13, 1938 in the Hickory Nut Community, to the late Font and Lola Carter.  She was a former seamstress at The Palm Beach Company of Somerset and a self-employed furniture refinisher.  Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church of Somerset.

Along with her parents, Betty is preceded in death by two husbands, Earl Messamore and Don Godby; her brothers, Ralph and Elza; sisters, Doris, Regina and Darlene; and twin grandsons Stephen and Matthew.

She is survived by her brother, John Carter; her sister, Nancy Carter; sons Max, Barry, and Marty (and Diane) Messamore; her daughter, Sue Messamore; two step-sons; one step-daughter; three grandsons; two granddaughters; 12 step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren (and one on the way); and six step-great-grandchildren.

Visitation for Betty will be held on Sunday, January 12, 2014, at 5 p.m. for family and friends at 6 p.m. at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 13, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Dallas Sears officiating.

 Interment will be in Lakeside Memorial Gardens.

Jesse Jacobs

Jesse Jacobs, 85, of Waynesburg, Ky., passed away Saturday, January 11, 2014.

Andrew Slavey

Andrew Lee Slavey, 93, of White Lily, Ky., departed this life on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at Somerwoods Nursing and Rehab Center.

Andrew was born on March 14, 1920, in Pulaski County, to the late Andrew Marty and Mary Catherine Brinson Slavey. He married Evelyn H. Meece in Somerset on August 21, 1947. They have one daughter from their union.

Andrew was of the Baptist faith, having accepted the Lord in his teenage years. He was a member of Denham Street Baptist Church and loved to attend church as long as his health permitted. In his younger days, he enjoyed fishing. He was a hopper car operator for Burley Belt Fertilizer and International Minerals in Ferguson, Ky.  

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, and their daughter, Sondra (and Norbert) Sanders, of Science Hill, Ky.; several nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Andrew is preceded in death by his parents; his four brothers, Melvin, Alton, Lewis and Jay Slavey; his sister, Evelyn Slavey Hargis; and one infant sister.

Visitation for Andrew will be on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at 6 p.m. at the chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home.  

His funeral service will be held on Monday, January 13, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.  Bro. Jeff Griffith will officiate the service.  

Music will be by Bro. Robert Thompson.

Interment will be in Lakeside Memorial Gardens.  

Somerset-Pulaski County E.M.S. workers will serve as pallbearers.

Dora Sparks

Dora Lynn Sparks, 47, of Liberty, Ky., passed away Friday, January 10, 2014 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

She was born in Winchester, Ky., on March 8, 1966, daughter of Hattie Angel Sparks and the late Bedford Sparks. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by one daughter, Dana Corns of Kings Mountain, Ky.; her mother, Hattie Sparks, and a companion, Joey Frederick.

Private services will be held.

Sibyl Stout

Mrs. Sibyl Elaine Stout, 75, of Somerset, Ky., daughter of the late Clyde Simeck and Ruby Perry Simeck, was born in Ferndale, Mich., on September 20, 1938.

She departed this life Wednesday January 8, 2014 at the Jean Waddle Hospice Care Center.

Other than her parents, Sibyl was preceded in death by her brother Paul Simeck on December 7, 1996.

She is survived by her husband, Harlan Stout of Somerset, Ky., whom she married on December 19, 1959; one daughter, Sherry Watkins and son-in-law, Bart Watkins of Ferguson, Ky.; two grandchildren,

Heather Watkins and Brian Watkins and one great-granddaughter, Ashlyn Davis.

Sibyl was a wonderful wife, mother and homemaker and a member of Ferguson Baptist Church.

A private funeral service was held on Thursday January 9, 2014 at the Sloans Valley Cemetery with Bro. David Muse officiating.

Southern Oaks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
