Somerset — Anna Marie Abbott

Anna Marie Abbott of West Science Hill, Ky., departed this earth at Batesville, Ind., on Friday, February 28, 2014 at the age of 86.

She was born at Mt. Zion on November 10, 1927, the third child of Fred Oscar and Flossie Doreen Hines Dick. Marie married Chester Ray Abbott on July 4, 1959 and they celebrated their 50th anniversary shortly before his death in 2009.

Marie was a long-time member of West Science Hill Baptist Church and was active as secretary for many years. She graduated from Eubank High School. After graduation, she was employed at Palm Beach Somerset for 42 years where she received their very first Employee of the Month award.

 Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ray; three brothers, Royal, Ellis, and Larry Dick; and one sister, Violet Brooks.

She is survived by one brother, Hollis Dick of Hamilton, Ohio; and three sisters, Lena (and Donald) Wesley of West Chester, Ohio, Margaret (and Ralph) Hall of Lockland, Ohio, and Jean (and Billie) Baugh of Batesville, Ind. Also surviving are numerous nephews and nieces.

Being our oldest sister, she was admired and loved by all of her family and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at West

Science Hill Baptist Church with Bro. TJ Godbey officiating.

Burial will be in West Science Hill Cemetery.

John Baxter

John Lowell Baxter, 67, passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2014, surrounded by his family at his home on Willow Brook Farm in Somerset.

John and his wife, Alberta "Bertie" Wesley Baxter, would have been married 49 years on April 4. They have two children, David (and Caroline) Baxter and Emily (and David) Duryea.

He was born in Keavy, Ky., on March 29, 1946, son of the late James Scott and Celia Elizabeth Williams Baxter. John was the brother to 10 siblings: the late Orpha (and Warren) Anders, Nylene & (the late Raymond) Reeves, Nell (and the late Charles) Nelson, Norma (and Atwood) Sizemore, Betty (and John) Gill, and Susie (and Vernon) Carr, the late Ira (and Ima) Baxter, Ermon (and Angela) Baxter, Kenneth (and Lee) Baxter, and Jim (and Zoe) Baxter. He was also a brother-in-law to Bill (and Sharon) Wesley, the late Joe Wesley, and the late Mike LaRue.

Known by countless students as Mr. Baxter, John retired from teaching at Pulaski County High School in Somerset, Ky.. He was a passionate teacher of chemistry, physics, and mathematics, who encouraged and inspired his students.

John was a faithful servant of God, living his daily life to bring glory to The Father. Additionally, he was a preacher of the gospel for 40 years. He was a member of the Science Hill Church of Christ.

John loved being outdoors, whether it be gardening or working his cattle. He found joy in the simple pleasures of God's creation.

He is a man of many roles and accomplishments, none of which brought him more pride than being a devoted Papaw to his five grandchildren: William Baxter, Ella Duryea, Jonathan Duryea, James David Baxter, and Jenna Duryea.

John's eight surviving brothers and sisters, along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, join his wife, Bertie, his children, and grandchildren in celebrating his life and mourning his passing.

A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home with David Baxter, Jonathan Brinson, Scott Eubank, Randy Reynolds and Phil Morgan officiating.

Burial will be in Science Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Thursday at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Lake Cumberland, 100 Parkway Drive, Somerset, Ky., 42503.

Ruth Hood

Ruth Hood, 95 Danville, passed away March 3, 2014.  

Born on September 17, 1918 in Ocala, Ky., she was the daughter of Chester A. and Mary Alice Goff Harris.  

She married William Carlos Hood on August 9, 1941 in Dayton, Ohio and he preceded her in death in 1997. Ruth was a homemaker on the farmand a member of the Sunnyside Baptist Church in Kentucky and Harmony Baptist Church in Avon.  

Survivors include her son, Carlos L. Hood and wife Mary Kay of Danville; sister Sally Ann Paul of South Carolina; grandchildren Cindy Hood of Federal Way, Wash., Lisa Malicoat of Danville, Debbie Spurlock of Pittsboro; great-grandchildren Alyssa Hitch, Justin Malicoat, Morgan Spurlock, Hailey Spurlock, Jase Spurlock and a great greatgrandson, Mason Hitch.  

Services will be at 11 am on Friday, March 7, 2014 in Baker Funeral Home, Danville, with burial to follow in Danville South Cemetery.  

Calling will be from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2014 in the funeral home.
