Carl Sherman


Carl W. Sherman, 79, of Cumberland, Ky., passed away on Monday, Oct. 22, 2012. 
He was born in Lynch, Ky., on June 12, 1933, a son of the late Clifford H. and Gertrude Sherman. A 1951 graduate of Lynch High School, Mr. Sherman served in the United States Air Force before returning home to become a self-employed mechanic. He owned and operated Inner Mountain Automotive. 
Mr. Sherman was a Kentucky Colonel and a 48-year member and past master of Benham Lodge No. 880 F. & A.M., where he served as treasurer for many years. He was also a member of Benham Chapter 170-Royal Arch Masons, Harlan Council No. 91, and Duffield Commandery No. 42. He took pride in his Lodge responsibilities, as he did in serving his community in numerous ways. He was affectionately referred to as “Carl Bill,” “grandfather,” and “papaw”.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 48 years, Jenny Sherman; his brother, Earl “Bud” Sherman; and a sister, Janrose Wilson.
He leaves to cherish his memory four children, Linda (and Chris) Lewis of Cynthiana, Ky.; Steve Sherman of Stanford, Ky.; Suzy (and Larry) Mounce of Somerset, Ky.; and Scott (and Deanna) Sherman of Cumberland, Ky. He was adored by five grandchildren: Hunter and Haley Albers, Ansley and Morgan Mounce, and Aly Brooke Sherman. He is also survived by three step-grandsons: Tyler, Michael, and Ethan Lewis. He is also survived by sisters, Eulene (David) Lyttle of Syracuse, N.Y.; Sybil (and Tom) Kelly of Owensboro, Ky.; and Juanita Slusher of Cumberland, Ky.; along with several other dear family and friends.
Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, in the chapel of the Tri-City Funeral Home in Benham, Ky. 
Masonic Rites will be observed at 7:30 p.m. during this time.  
The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, in the chapel with the Rev. Troy Poff officiating.  
Burial will be at the D.L. Creech cemetery in Cumberland, Ky., with military rights observed. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mr. Sherman’s name to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
