Somerset — Ovelene Barker

Ovelene Muse Barker, 86, of West Highway 80 in Somerset, Ky., died peacefully in her sleep on March 19, 2014 at her home.  

Ovelene was born January 11, 1928 in Naomi, Ky., the eldest daughter of the late Elbert and Alma Ard Muse.

Ovelene was a loving and devoted mother, a proud Christian woman and a friend to many. She was retired from the Palm Beach Company. Ovelene enjoyed sewing, making quilts and working in her flowers.  Ovelene had  been a member of Sardis Methodist Church for 65 years and was still active in and faithful to her Church.

Ovelene is survived by her four children, Billy Barker and Shelia of Nancy, Ky., Sue Smith and Jim of Greenwood, Ind., Rick Barker of Somerset, Ky., and Randy Barker and Tina of Somerset, Ky.; six grandchildren, David Mack of Lexington, Ky., Josh Barker and Denise of Jeffersonville, Ind., Allison Fletcher and Josh of Kannapolis, NC, Suzanne Howell and Phil of Swayzee, Ind., and Devin and Hannah Barker of Somerset, Ky.; nine great-grandchildren, Grace, Abigail and Simeon Fletcher, Noah and Emily Howell, Morgan Whitaker and Braxton, Bryson, Ambria and Myah Mack; her brothers, Carter Muse and

Ilene of Nancy, Ky., and Donald Muse and Sue of Somerset, Ky.; her sisters, Pauline Weddle, Freda Yanders and Charlie, Regena Prather and Gene, and Patty Ruckel of Nancy, Ky.; her sister-in-law, Blanche Muse of Frazier, Ky.; her great aunts,  Dorothy Muse of Nancy, KY and Geneva Sanders of Stanford, Ky.; and like a son, Larry Garner and Joan of Nancy, Ky. Ovelene is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and friends whom she loved very much.

Ovelene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Robert Barker; a brother, Clifford Muse; and brothers-in-law Kenneth Weddle, Jerry Polston, Milton Ruckel, Carl Barker Jr. Gilbert Tyler, Wendell Norfleet, and Johnny Barker; and sisters-in-law Bernice Flynn, Nancy Norfleet, Jean Tyler and Gracie

Lou Bundy.

Funeral services will be Monday, March 24 at 11 a.m. at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. Chris Jasper, Bro. Rick Barker and Bro. Kenneth Pierce officiating.  

Burial will be in the Mill Springs National Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday evening March 23 from 4-9 p.m. and until the service on Monday morning at the funeral home.  

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Tyler, Doug Yanders, Tim Prather, Roger Weddle, Darren Polston and Terry Prather.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Womens Group at the Sardis Methodist Church or in the form of Gideon Bibles.

Evelyn Brown

Evelyn Michele Moore Brown, 68, of Somerset, Ky., passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at Springfield Nursing and Rehab in Springfield, Ky.

She was born in Louisville, Ky., on March 8, 1946, daughter of Woodrow Lindsay and Marie Catherine Wittry Moore. She was a homemaker and attended the University of Kentucky.

She is survived by one son, Derek (and Ashley) Brown of Russell Springs, Ky.; three brothers, Richard (and Marie) Moore, Robert (and Pattie) Moore and Woody (and Judy) Moore; one grandson, Hunter Brown; one niece and one nephew.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home.

Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Saturday at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home.

Carla Childers

Carla G. Sellers Childers, 48, of Burnside, Ky., passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2014.

She was born in Somerset, Ky., on December 14, 1965, daughter of Carol Sellers and Betty Louise Stigall Boggs. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Childers of Burnside; her parents; one son, Scott Walker Sellers (and Stephanie); two daughters, Amanda Hope Childers (and Jason Sears) and Chishona Marie Childers (and Donal Weber), all of Somerset; one brother, Robert Joe Sellers of Corbin, Ky., two sisters, Glenna Louise Floyd of Tennessee and Carlena Mae Smith of Bardstown, Ky.; and two grandsons, Donovan Scott Sellers and Bradyn Edward Childers.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Charity Sue Sabine.

Private services will be held.

Jean Ann Hoy

Jean Ann Hoy, age 68 of Burnside, Ky., passed away on Wednesday March 19, 2014 at her home.

She was born on November 15, 1945 in Parkersburg, WVa., to Lois Leonard Taylor and the late Lester Taylor.

She is preceded in death by her father.

She is survived by her mother, Lois Taylor of Kenton, Ohio; her husband, Thomas Hoy of Burnside, Ky.; two daughters, Samantha (Calvin) Walker of Franklin, Ohio and Ann (and Adam) Trebolo of Nicholasville, Ky.; two brothers, Edward (and Marilyn) Taylor of Lucasville, Ohio and Tom (and Cathy) Taylor of Kenton, Ohio; one sister, Linda (and Kevin) Hedge of Ft. Wayne, Ind. She is also survived

by two grandchildren, Ashley Walker and Zachary Garland.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2014 after 2 p.m. in the chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday March 22, 2014 at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.

Easton Hutchison

Easton Knox Hutchison, infant son of Jeremy and Stacey Hutchison, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2014.

He was born in Somerset, Ky., on March 18, 2014.  

He is survived by his parents, Jeremy and Stacey Branscum Hutchison; one sister, Emmary Hutchison; one brother, Eyan Hutchison, all of Science Hill; paternal grandparents, Lisa Hutchison of Bronston and Steve Hutchison of Monticello and maternal grandparents, Audrey and Elbert Branscum of Eubank.

Private services will be held.

Helen Hyden

Helen Darlene Hyden, 69, of Mount Victory, departed this life on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at the Jean Waddle Hospice Care Center in Somerset.

Helen was born on June 6, 1944, in Sandy Gap, Ky., to the late Mack and Beulah Moore Higgins. She married Glenn Hyden, in November of 1961 in Somerset. She worked at the Palm Beach Company of Somerset for 15 years. Helen was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by her sons, James Hyden and Louis (and Judy) Hyden, both of Somerset; her daughter, Penny (and Doug) Mounce, of Somerset; brothers, Mack Higgins, of Louisville, James "Jim" Higgins, of Shopville, Johnny Higgins, of Petros, Tenn., and Joe Higgins, of Lansing, Tenn.; five of her

sisters, Sandy Creech, of Ano Community, Connie Higgins, of Lansing, Tenn., Frankie Ford, of Sunbright, Tenn., Pam Swint, of Tenn., and Nellie Clore, also of Tennessee; three grandchildren, Ashley Hyden, Kyle Hyden and Nicole Roark; three great-grandchildren, Kody Roark, Dylan Roark and Xander Creech; and several special nieces and nephews, including Sheila Morgan and Steven Higgins.

Preceding Helen in death are her parents; her husband, Glenn, who passed away in 2004; their son, Carl Wayne Hyden; her brother, Ronald Higgins; two of her sisters, Patsy Higgins and Janie Higgins; her half-sister, Janice Sams; and a grandson, Shawn Creech.

Visitation will be on Friday, March 21, 2014, after 6 p.m., at the chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home.  

A graveside service will be held at 12 noon Saturday, March 22, 2014 at the Mount Victory Cemetery.  Interment will be in Mount Victory Cemetery.

The family requests expressions of sympathy be made to the Hospice of Lake Cumberland.

Edward Phelps

Edward Wayne Phelps, 84, formerly of Pulaski County, passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Parkwood Health Care Center in Lebanon, Ind..

Visitation will be at the chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2014.

The funeral service will follow the visitation at 1 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.  

Interment will be in the Pine Thicket Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Pine Thicket Cemetery Fund.
