Commonwealth Journal

—

Mary M. "Granny" Ratliff, 95 of Somerset, Ky., departed this life on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.
She was born on February 28, 1917 in Whitesburg, Ky., to the late John and Sally Kelly Sexton. She was a housewife. Mrs. Ratliff was of the Baptist faith. Granny will be missed by her family and all of the people whose lives she touched. Her passion in life was her family. She enjoyed spending her time planting flowers and watching birds. Granny's gift in life was that she never met a stranger. Everyone was always welcome in her home for food and fellowship, but her greatest joy in life was serving her
Lord and Savior. Whenever you left Granny, she always blessed you with a beautiful smile and said “God bless you.” She will be sadly missed here on earth, but will be welcomed to her heavenly home with open arms.
The family would like to thank everyone who held prayer and sent love during our time of difficulty.  Special blessings to the staff at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, Fourth Floor Neurological Unit,  Third Floor Special Care Unit and Anjum Iqbal, M.D. for all the special care they gave our grandmother.
She is survived by a son, Chuck Ratliff of Ecorce, Mich.; a daughter, Jeannie (and Kay) Carrender of Somerset, Ky.; 10 grandchildren, David (and Rosa) Ratliff, Elayna Ratliff, Lee (and Mary Sue) Ratliff, Ragen (and George) Hamilton, Constance (and J.) Willis, Tammi (and Dwayne) Eggen, Melissa (and
Joe) Reed, Penni Ward, David Thompson, and Michelle Thompson; and 14 great-grandchildren, Christopher Ratliff, Thomas Ratliff, Shane Ratliff, Rhys Hamilton, Jessica Hamilton, George Hamilton, Kaleigh Hamilton, Christopher Eggen, Dillon Eggen, Victoria Reed, Riley Reed, Cody Carrender, Mason and Kellie Ward.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Henry Ratliff, whom she married on November 13, 1945 in Beattyville, Ky., and who passed away on June 7, 1985; a son, Kenneth Ratliff; five brothers, Johnny, Burnett, Stevie, Cisco and Amale Sexton; and three sisters, Martha Ann Ratliff, Dorothy Sexton and Purlee Thompson.
