Ben Stuart Moody, age 88, of Somerset, Ky., passed from this life on July 21, 2013 at his home.
Ben was born in Burnside, Ky. on Jan. 26, 1925. In Burnside, his family owned a grocery store. He attended Burnside High School and then was drafted into the U.S. Air Force during World War II. When the war ended, Ben returned home where he worked as a butcher before he became a truck driver. He hauled gas for several years before joining Cumberland Lake Shell in 1963 where he worked for 25 years.
Ben married Lucille Rice of Somerset, Ky. in 1961. He then had one daughter, Martha Ellen Moody (Pierce). Ben enjoyed his daughter and worked very hard to provide for his family. Martha had one daughter, Melissa Hope Pierce (Henderson). In 1988, Ben retired from Cumberland Lake Shell so that he and Lucille could babysit Melissa while Martha worked. In 2011 Melissa married Jayson Henderson of Somerset, Ky. At their wedding, Ben was able to give Melissa away.
Ben enjoyed gardening and cooking. Many summers he grew cucumbers, tomatoes, and green beans. He prepared family dinners every evening and Sunday lunch after church. He was famous among his family for his delicious homemade pimento cheese.
Ben also enjoyed the companionship of several dogs throughout his life. One pet stands out: a shih tzu, Bo. Ben and Bo ran many daily errands together for 17 years.
Ben's extended family was very important to him. Ben was known for making conversation and friends where ever he went. He never met a stranger. His biggest pleasure came from getting to know others and making them smile. Ben will be greatly missed by all those who had the opportunity to know and spend time with him.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Rice Moody of Somerset; his daughter, Martha Ellen Pierce of Somerset; a granddaughter, Melissa Hope (and Jayson) Henderson of Nancy, Ky.; and one brother, Tom (and the late Midge) Moody of Tateville, Ky.
He is also be survived by a great-grandchild, Hope Lucille Henderson, arriving in Dec., as well as a special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Lennis and Doris Rice of Somerset, Ky.
