Ed Ard

Milburn Edison “Ed” Ard, 82, of Mt. Vernon, Ill., died at 7:20 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at the White Oak Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon.

Ed was born October 9, 1925 in Naomi, Ky., a son of Columbus and Creole Weddle Ard. He married Mary Ellen Scrimager on April 4, 1942 in Kentucky; she survives in Mt. Vernon.

Ed was a farmer and had worked as a Maintenance Superintendent for Hollywood Brands in Centralia, Essex International in Decatur, General Cable in Monticello, and Continental Tire in Mt. Vernon. Ed was a Baptist. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and participated in the Joint Task Force 132 Operation IVY in the Marshall Islands. He was a member of the Mt. Vernon AMVETS, American Institute of Plant Engineers, and a lifetime member of the American Angus Association.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Ard, one son, Ralph Ard and wife Lea Ellen of Mt. Vernon; one brother, Herman Ard of Hammond, Ill.; two sisters, Lois Sailor of Somerset, Ky., and Dorlene Sumpter of Nancy, Ky.; and also five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Shirley Muse; and one grandson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 21, at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Ill., with Rev. Ronald L. Nelson officiating. Burial will follow at the Harmony Cemetery in Mt. Vernon with military honors provided by American Legion Post 141 of Mt. Vernon.

Friends may call today from 5-7 p.m. at the Newell Funeral Home.
