Community News
Commonwealth Journal
The Mississippi Blues and Appalachian Folk musical stylings of Steve Kirkpatrick and Doug Choate will be featured at Amons’ South beginning at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15.
Choate plays guitar, while Kirkpatrick plays harmonica and flute. The duo made their first performance recently at Cedar Creek vineyard getting a great reception from the audience.
They were encouraged by the crowd to do other shows in the area.
According to Choate, they simply enjoy playing music together and having a good time.
Amon’s South is a full-service restaurant and bakery located across from Wal-Mart on U.S. 27 in Somerset. In addition to their famous doughnuts, the restaurant features panini sandwiches, char-boiled burgers and homemade chips.
Kirkpatrick is a life-long resident of Pulaski County. He is a well-known musician having played with a number of groups through the years. He plays a variety of harmonicas as well as the flute. Kirkpatrick has played on a number of CDs including the Danny Dutton “Secret Commonwealth” series. He has also played at the Master Musician Festival and many other local venues.
Choate moved to Somerset in 1992 while working for the University of Kentucky Co-operative Extension Service. He retired in 2007. He is a member of the board of directors of Watershed Arts Alliance, works as a volunteer with the Master Musicians Festival and has various other volunteer roles in the community.
He has played the guitar with a variety of groups for many years and plays the tenor guitar as well as the mandolin.
The performance is also being sponsored by Watershed Arts Alliance, a local arts organization which supports local performers and artists. Watershed recently relocated its RiverStone Art Gallery to 308 West Mt. Vernon, the former location of Something Special and sometimes known as the Vortex Corner in Somerset. The new RiverStone also houses the Sheltowee Artisans Shop and Little House Productions, a studio for local artist Dave Cazalet. RiverStone is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Watershed Arts Alliance is a not-for-profit local organization whose purpose is to promote the arts and local artists. Watershed Arts Alliance is supported in part by the City of Somerset, the Pulaski County Fiscal Court, memberships and donations. An annual membership to Watershed Arts Alliance is $25 for individuals, $35 for families and $50 for corporate memberships. Anyone wishing to become a member may send their dues to Watershed Arts Alliance, P.O. Box 604, Somerset, KY 42502.
The facility is available to rent for local events. Contact James Vitatoe, the executive director at (606) 219-0239.
